I never tail gate anyone, and yet last week had the 'barnes wallace' stone chip and today a bl**dy chipped screen......Not happy, especially as I can't get it repaired until tomorrow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif

Anybody know whether the repairs are invisible these days, as the last one I had done was like a circular slug that I could see at all times.

Repairs we've had here vary a lot Japper.
Some are invisible,some are awful.

I thought 99% of insurance policies gave you free windscreen replacement these days ?

You could always 'assist the chip in spreading' to ensure you qualify for a replacement..

A few deftly applied taps with a hammer should do it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/froggie_red.gif

just punch it gently but firmly from the inside. Windscreens aren't very strong when working against opposite forces that they were designed for....

Tell me about it, i once put a surfboard through mine (didn't have a roofrack)
took no pressure whatsoever!

get the windscreen repairer to break it for you. They normally will oblige if you're willing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks for the reply guys. It is a very small chip, like a pin head that has then put a 2-3mm long crack in the screen. I have covered it with selotape to stop dirt impregnating the crack. Unless the crack spreads overnight, with temp variation then I will let them repair it and see how it looks. Firstly I don't trust muppets to replace my screen and this month has been expensive enough already without shelling 50 quid when I shouldn't need to. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had to replace my A4's screen and it went without a hitch.
You wouldn't have known it was done apart from the lack of the Audi logo in one of the bottom corners.

Yeah, but i had to have my screen replaced on my TT. I got them to order a screen through Audi so it had correct colour sun band and the Audi logo etc. They did a decent job of the screen but stanley knifed my dash. Oh and when I came out to where the car was parked and saw both offside wheels were a knats ar*e away from the kerb, I walked around checking them. This resulted in a round of applause and general abuse 'Tw*t thinks we'd damage his mota'

Hey, steady on, that's slander /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Seriously though, great car especially with 18" RS4's and in moro blue, and only cost me 2k in depreciation from new in 15 months. How many cars can claim that.

I know where your coming from jappa. Its a bit of a lottery TBh, some repairs have been aweful but I recently had a similar crack repaired and it is now almost invisible. I used autoglass and the guy who fixed it said he would repair it and if i wasn't satisfied he would just replace the whole screen if i paid the £50 excess.

I also watched him like a hawk as i hate leaving my car with twonks who do not treat it as i do. I too inspect my cars, in fact im a pain in the butt and spend 10 mins checking every panel but so what - so would they be if they ever owned anything decent.

Well it went in this morning, and the guy warned me the crack could spread as he did the repair. Well he took the car to the back of the workshop out of my sight. 20 mins later came back and said, as feared the crack spread to the outside of the screen ( 2 inches ). Funny thing is 2 mins after he took it out of sight, I swear blind I could hear someone with a ball peen hammer....tap,tap,taping away /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Anyway, got them to order an OEM screen for early next week.

So your insurance company will let you insist on an OE screen ?
I'll have to remember that, should it happen on my A3.
I just 'went with the flow' and they fitted an aftermarket screen to my A4.

Didn't expect you to ever 'go with the flow' mate /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, yep tell them you want an OE screen. With the TT I had, insured through Norwich Union they didn't bat an eyelid. This time around Autoglass had to get price of OE screen and then get it approved by my present insurer's, Tesco.

Obviously they said 'no problem' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ok.gif

Now all I need is for Autoglass to make a perfect job next week /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/noidea.gif

Autoglass did a good job for me with an OEM screen last month. Should be fine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ok.gif

adamr, I take it the replacement OEM screen does NOT have the Audi emblem in the drivers side bottom corner anymore !. If I remember correctly from when my TT was done, this is how Audi supply replacement screens. Probably for warranty issues as they can tell whether it's replacement or not.

Can you confirm please /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ok.gif

My replacement A4 screen definitely did NOT have the Audi logo.
I distinctly remember that was missing.

BTW, the number of friends / colleagues that have had cracked screens in the past 6 - 12 months is unreal.

Blo*dy cr*p brittish roads /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

Japper,

My new OEM screen doesn't have the Audi symbol, it says Pilkington instead.

The Pilkington label is also on the driver's side - on my original screen the Audi symbol was on the passenger's side.

Adam

adding to my bad luck, did my screen on the A40 yesterday.

******

Well, just had the call to arrange fitting tomorrow afternoon.

I'll let you know how it goes

Well it's being the OE screen ( complete with logo ) is being fitted on my drive as I type.

Keeping a good eye on hime via the hidden web cams in the shrubbery /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Well Autoglass get a thumbs up people /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ok.gif

Top job with 9.5/10.

It would have been perfect but a little of the glue had spread and could be seen above the rear view mirror, now pushed back with a piece of card. Oh and the screen needs a polish too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Oh, and he went away with me road tax, so is putting it through the letter box tonight.

Looks like i'll have to use the wife's fiesta /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

what's the latest on the "flappy-paddles" japper?
side of me car got kyboshed by an old wreck of a Fiesta so the shiny bit's of uber-flap will be a welcome distraction once they're ready!!
tried posting up links to the pics of the damage (doesn;t look much, but quarter panel needs replacing, almost 2grand's worth for the insurers to shell out) but the links didn't work....
