Well last night the EML come on and then this morning the DPF warning came on.
I used a scanner and checked the fault codes, there's only one fault.

P0404 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation circuit range/performance

Now obviously because of this EGR fault the DPF won't regenerate :/

Anyone got any information or help, i'm reluctant to spend £200 for the EGR valve if it turns out the blocked DPF could be the cause?

Yeah it's a 2.0 TDI 170
Engine code is BMN, i'm a diesel mechanic for merc benz but I do know that a blocked DPF can cause EGR issues and vice versa ;)

The P0404 is a recognised code for diesel engines with electronic EGR valves, I must admit I did use a MAC tools scanner
but i'll have access to VCDS on Monday. I keep meaning to buy VCDS but I never seem to get round to doing it.

Anyone got the Audi instructions for checking the EGR feed, earth and reference signals?

I have removed the EGR valve and stripped it down to find the actual trumpet has snapped off the adjuster fork.
A picture in a bit will show what I mean but this does mean I need a new EGR valve :(

Here is a picture of the mechanism inside the black plastic housing, as you can see the 'T' bar has snapped off, the round disc is the top hat.
I have removed the disc and welded the 'T' bar back onto the trumpet which controls the amount of exhaust gas allowed through.
