Westy its taken about 4 sittings now but i've just finished reading every page of this mamouth thread and I sooo applaude the dedication you share with your motor....

I want one even more now...

Such an inspiration for any S3 noob......

Must admit though my misses would tear me a new one if I spent the amount you do in such a short period.....

I can confirm that this car goes and handles pretty well :) westy, where is the update about you changing the boot lights and boost gauge led? These people need to know!!!
 
Change of esp button rack worth a mention? Perhaps a change of sidelight bulbs is the bare minimum :)

Car was vicious on boost, even if it was only holding 16psi and I think the rear ballast was making the car seem a lot more planted then it would normally be :lmfao:
 
I knew your car handled but didn't know it did that well! You have done brilliantly so far. Can't wait to see how it does at the correct psi. Got me thinking I should be moving onto the s3 sooner than planned haha

The quattro makes such a difference to the handling. On a FWD car you need to do a hell of a lot of suspension mods to get the level of grip you get straight away from quattro. Just look at Prawns car.

Go and buy yourself an S they're nice and cheap now ;)
 
Ok, I'm all set for my little trip to Bill's tomorrow. Got my WMI wired in and Bill has welded up a nozzle boss into a 63mm 90 degree bend to fit my FMIC pipework. Going to get the WMI mapped in along with some tweaks if possible as the last time I saw him I had a knackered fuel pump and a small FMIC that wasn't up to the job.

Here's the WMI kit install, currently only got water in the tank as I haven't got round to getting hold of some Meth just yet:

Started off by finding a suitable place to mount the tank and pump. The boot seems to be the place of choices as there's lots of room and the pump needs to be mounted near the tank.

I didn't get a pick of the pump mounted but it is between the tank and seat fitted to the side panel.

I then mounted the LED into a blank dash button by the ESP button:

The water/meth hose was run through the rubber grommet behind the pollen filter, in behind the glove box and then under the trim and carpet to the boot:

The drivers side lower trim was removed to fit the controller:

I ran all the wiring under the trim and carpet on the drivers side then under the rear seats and into the boot, passenger side:

I then cut the feed to my boot gauge and T'd in the controller:

This controller uses boost pressure to operate the pump at certain PSI levels. I can bring in the WMI on half pressure between 1-11psi then full blast between 9-39psi. At the moment its set at 11 and 39psi so it wont come on properly for my 3 hour journey to Bill's in the morning. I'll try to keep off the boost if I can. If it does come on it will just p!ss water out of the hose onto the road so no big deal.

Got 2 AEM kits from a Latvian seller on eBay. Asked if he could do a discount for 2 kits and explained that others from ASN might want to buy these kits. He only gave me a 3% discount but it's better than nothing. Think we ended up paying £280 each for a kit.
 
Latvia it is then, i saw them but wasn't sure if they were reliable sellers. I already have the boss welded in too,lol

I'm not sure if Bill has any meth at his garage buti he does I'll see if he'll sell me some.

Unfortunately I can't go too silly just yet as I'm still on standard rods. As soon as the rods, mani, and head are fitted I'll be going back to Bill again.

He has methanol there don't worry... I even cleared my car off the ramp today for fitting your pipe work :)

Cheers for clearing your car off the ramp tufts but I should be able to do it on the ground easy. I can get the bumper off in about 2 mins flat now :)

My last dyno figure was 269 with the small cooler and bad fuel pump so I'm sure to see the 280bhp that Tam's made on that day. Anything over 280 will be a bonus at the moment.
 
No fair! Now we have to wait for Westicles to drive all the way from Bills back to his homeland of Essex. that'll take him hours!

Unless it went well on the dyno, in which case, it'll take him LESS hours
 
Get off my back guys, it's a long old drive back from Bill's. Just got home :lazy:

Firstly, Bill, the WMI threw a spaz as soon as I left your place, ****** thing..........

Bit of a mixed bag of success and failure today.

First I whipped off the front bumper to fit the 90degree alloy bend with WMI boss welded in (thank Bill). With that on and the nozzle (medium sized) screwed in place we did a smoke test.

Smoke was pouring out around the alloy mid section of the B5 TIP, which was quickly sorted by a few turns on the jubilee clips. There was no smoke escaping from the FMIC pipework so that was a nice surprise as I'd convinced myself it was leaking :think:

Got the minge on the rollers and went for a dyno run. I'm sure we did a straight forward run just to see what improvements the Toyo cooler and new fuel pump made but I cant seem to find those results (maybe Bill can post up if he has them.

Anyway we messed about with the Revo settings. Currently the Boost was on 7 out of 9 and the timing was on 4 out of 9. Bill tried boost on 9/9 to see what we got.

Boost pressure was a scary 28psi and the wheels were spinning on the rollers giving me a lovely reading of 320bhp ;)

Bill dropped the boost setting to 8/9 and sprayed some glue on the tyres to keep them on the rollers. This time we got a staggering torque figure of 326.5lbft :faint: Check out Run 5 at the bottom:

Bill was impressed as he'd not seen a normal K04 car with these mods make that much torque but I was scared and asked him to drop the boost back to the 7/9 it was on when I arrived. I'll turn it up to 8/9 as soon as I get my rods changed over.

So with nothing to do with the boost without risking a bent rod Bill looked at the timing side of things. The Toy core was doing such a good job that he turned up the Revo timing setting to 5/9 and did another run. This gave some nice results too as seen above on run 5

So, happy with that Bill started looking at the WMI which had been disconnected at the pump till this point. He had a small amount of Meth left which filled my tank about 3 quarters full, I need to buy some soon. He then adjusted the controller settings so that the WMI came in gently around 11psi then full whack on 20psi. This seemed to reduce the cars power slightly and Bill had seen this on a Seat recently. He suggested we tried the small nozzle as this cured the issue on the Seat.

So in went the small nozzle and he went for another dyno. The WMI LED started flashing, I pointed it out to Bill and he aborted the run. We dug out the AEM kit instructions to find out what 3 flashes of the LED meant. It means the following:

"Pump Driver Shorted
Trigger condition: Current exceeding 15A on driver output.
The status LED will flash a count of three and repeat. The pump driver will continue to drive the pump. If the open is repaired the controller will function normally. Fluid flow may be lost in this condition"

Annoyingly things were looking good (run 3 shows a good holding torque line, before dyno was aborted) and this was with 2 and a bit degrees of timing in unisettings.

I fannied about with the wiring under the rear seats but the only thing that stopped the LED error was to cycle the ignition, then it would error again as soon as the pump started flowing :banghead:Bill took the timing out until I find the issue.

I've now got to try and find this issue before I can use unisettings and add the timing back in. So tonight's task is a bit of googling for anyone else who's had this issue. It only occurred when we swapped to the small nozzle :think:

So I'm happy i've got bundles of torque, and can have a load more once my rods have been changed. Little bit annoyed with the WMI side of things but I'm sure I'll get that sorted soon. It looks like 290bhp is still a long way off and even with the other mods I plan to do I'm starting to think that 300bhp from a K04 just wont happen. Oh well.
 
I dunno man, think about Wellys results on the hybrid.....

300bhp on the stock manifold, 330 on the 034, then 344 on the XS manifold!

add to that you're going large port as well, so that'll take a load more timing. Also, for the very minor cost, would it be worth having your AEB head skimmed to bring the CR up to 9.5:1?

I still reckon you'll get pretty close, and the way you're heading, if it's not enough, you'll have done everything in prep to just drop a hybrid in there!
 
I like your thinking Nick O' laus. I'm not one to quit so I shall persevere.

The thing is with welly's was that his turbo had the flow but was being choked by the mani. My poor little K04 is flat out almost.

Yes they do look very promising. I've just found another guy on the net who had the same error as me and it turned out his check valve wasn't working correctly. I'm wondering if mine got jammed or wasn't put in properly when I swapped over the nozzles :think: will take a look tomorrow.

It was pretty scary seeing that sort of boost but what a good torque figure :eyebrows:

Car does pick up a lot better with the extra torque. The drive home from Bill's is always a joy as the car always seems better.

Sounds plausible... if the pump is working harder to force the check valve open it will draw more current... fitting the smaller nozzle will increase this load too as its got to force the solution through a smaller hole... all about total flow lol...
