A grand TV

Ok, so there may be posts on best TVs already round here but I ain't managed to find them!

My parents currently have a nice Phillips TV (more an attractive furniture feature with a good TV in it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) anyway, the screen has decided to start turning green and keep switching off and on! VERY frustrating as you can imagine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif It must be the tube that is going?

So now they want a new TV. The budget is about a grand -does anyone have some really good suggestions for a bargain or good model to look out for. Tough question as I guess it's similar to buyign a PC - it's obsolete so quickly, but looking to get the best quality for moeny - just thought someone on here may know of something good?

this months which mag reccomends panasonic tx-32pd50 set, toshiba32zp48 ( ive got 36 inch version of this telly and its good picture and sound, got 3 as from comet and sure it won awards from the big boys mags )and a sony kv32fq86, they have got 28 inch models and 26 inch models if you need em

I may have not made it so easy for ya's - without giving a spec, but basically we want flat screen, good size, I guess anything around 28" onwards would suffice there. surround sound or at least the capabilities to add decent surround sound. nice stand perhaps?

From reading of other posts, Sony seem to be pretty darn good!

Last year, I got a Toshiba 32 inch Picture Frame model, with built-in Dolby Digital decoder & sourround speakers. It's the dog's whatsits. Should be avaialble for about a Grand if you look carefully
 
I've had the Panasonic TX36PD30 for about six months, outstanding picture and some handy features i.e. PIP. After checking the top of the range offerings from Toshiba, Philips and Sony I found the Panasonic to have the best picture and design but the Toshiba Picture Frame also has the added bonus of Dolby Digital sound which I didn't need. I think both models in the 32" version are about in your price range.

Also it's worth considering the new HDTV format which is coming out shortly.

no - it's not that one mate, can't find a pic of it on the web, but the model is: 29pt6773/05 and a good few years old. Still saying that my mum and dad had a TV from when they were first married which lasted MUCH longer than that! Pee's me off when stuff like this happens, well looked after and not used THAT much, and it fooks up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Still the hunt continues and I like some of the suggestions! Thanks everyone. Just hope mum and dad listen to you all and don't sneak off and get the first one they see! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif (which wouldn't surprise me too much! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif)

I recently bought a Philips 32" 32PW9509, went to loads of audio visual shops to test and compare CRT, plasmas and LCD TVs. Settled with the Philips as the picture quality is absolutely stunning and blows away any LCD or plasmas. Take your favourite DVD to the store and test the screens.
 
Can i just say spending a thousand pounds on a tv (having previously done it) is like spending a thousand pounds on a pc (having previously done it) a waste of money. Which you seemed to have noted in your question. Especially for your parents who won't really understand the pleasures of the 'technology'/marketing you have paid for.

Anyway...Got my sis a picture frame toshiba which i'm sure your parents will like the look of for £350 delivered.

You can get a 32inch flat widescreen for £300 and less these days. Get them one of them. And let them spend £700 on something they will actually get some enjoyment out of.

Spending a £1000 on a tv is a waste of money. Bit like buying a brand new car. Might be nice to have the latest and greatest. But 6month/2years down the line. you can get the same or better for half the price. So why ride that curve unless you can afford/appreciate it.

NB - on all the above - i am assuming your parents are like mine!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
yeah Ian - I agree on a lot there mate. The figure was just something my old man threw into conversation at the dinner table. Design obsolescence is always going to be around.

I'm thinking we will realistically look for something a bit cheaper - my folks are a bit headstrong and will just buy what they want, which in a way I think is great as it's their money, let them be happy, but I always think; damn I could find that cheaper for them!!! etc /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

but make them a deal,,,,before they hand over their cash...let them give you the opportunity to source it cheaper. and for every pound cheaper you can get it...you get 50p commission /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Have a look on ebay as well, loads of really good tubes on there for between £100-£300. If you go for a Sony the tubes guaranteed for 10 years. Plenty of people getting rid of perfectly good £1k TV's which they've replaced with a sub standard Plasma.
Don't start me off again on the tube vs plasma/LCD garbage it's already been argued to death

Yeah - I initially thought Ebay, but I don't like the idea of it being second hand - which sounds snobby, and trust me I ain't like that, I guess it's one of those things...I'd NEVER live it down if it bust like our current TV! Of course I'm not ruling ebay out as it's obviously not only second hand equipment.

Oh and don't worry about the plasma/LCD debate - we're gonna go for LCD - I'll force them too! My dad mentions plasma but I think he only says that as he'll have heard people mention it and think it's the way to go!

Perhaps I'm not giving the ideal descriptions as to what we want, but you guys are probably very clued up on my parents! All in all I just want them to get something that is good quality and long lasting.

LCD is stil on the steep part of the curve in terms of prices reducing. and i think cost of a 32" LCD is well over a grand. If its availabe at all. i can only recall seeing a 26" at under a grand. Not sure how that would look in a living room these days.
At the mo - i dont think you can go wrong with a Sony or Tosh CRT for about £350.
 
Totally agree with Ian.
I've bought my parents a 25" Sony (non widescreen) for £63 on ebay and they're over the moon. When we moved house we managed to drop my ancient old 29" Trinitron, it still worked but the colours were out. Replaced it with a newer model 29" for £90 again on ebay. Has been faultless for the last year.
I just don't like the latest models, they're just way too enormous and a real eyesore in my opinion. LCD? Well maybe, but what are the benefits apart from picture quality that's at best nearly as good as a tube? We have a big lounge in a victorian house and to be honest a 36" LCD screen would look ridiculous. The only place to put it would be either where the TV is at the moment saving no space whatsoever, or over the fireplace which would be too high.
If you've got a toytown house or a high tech loft conversion then I guess it makes sense.
LCD is great in a kitchen or bedroom, and will be the way forward when/if we ever get HDTV but at the moment it's too expensive for what it is unless you are going for the full home cinema setup in your basement, in which case a projector is a realistic/cheaper/better quality alternative.

not sure fingermouse. I always think it's a compoota shop and therefore can't be as good as a set from a TV retailer - I know this may be very silly as they may very well be kick ***! but then I guess if they were everyone would be saying buy one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/noidea.gif

...anyway as for plasma it looks like we have totaly eradicated that one!

So bringing the price right down, I've found something which has been getting great reviews! clicky it's still a philips, but the prices are very good. Managed to find one around the £250 mark I think - need to backtrack to find it again though! heh

The only thing that really concerns me is this talk of HDTV...

Opinions/ideas welcomed!

If its the ones that Tiny are advertising you're tlaking about they got a CR@p review on one of the TV programmes (can't remember which one).

Considered one myself as thought it seemed a good deal but decided against it after the review.
 
If you're only spending £250 then I wouldn't worry about HDTV. It's at least 18months away. Some plasma/LCD options are claiming to be HDTV compatible even though the spec hasn't been finalised so you're far safer buying a cheap tube now and waiting for HiDef to be delivered, with all the bugs ironed out, pricing to come down, then upgrade to something that supports it.

May be a bit late in the day for this but for just a notch over a grand how about a Panasonic Viera TX37 plasma with stand? Top notch product with none of the traditional hassles of plasma ownership. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile_smoking.gif

Know a dealer in Watford selling via Ebay who is an authorised Panasonic retailer; I'm sure you'll get it in the back of your car for the trip home if you could be bothered to get it! Otherwise it would be a courier job.
