Hi,

Still on the hunt for an A3 to replace my B6. I've found two tdis for about the same price, one is an 05 sport with s line styling pack, half leathers and Bose with DSG and paddle shifters on the wheel. The other is an 06 sport manual with MFSW and an armrest.
The 2005 has less miles 130k, and looks nicer, but I would quite like the MFSW and armrest. Will the 06 model have any other advantages over the 05 car?

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Maybe you could post some autotrader links? I would go for the 05 because of the higher spec, fact is an armrest and MFSW wont set you back that much! It also depends on whether the two cars both have the same engine? As in 140 or 170bhp.

The 05's with better spec is 140 and 06 is 170, although I'm not too fussed, heard bad things about the 170 and can award get a remap...

I would suggest the 05 with DSG would be better because the manual gearbox is crap and just destroys itself with the power, also look out for things like engine mounts, CV joints, turbos, manifold flaps which are terrible on these cars.
The car is great dont get me wrong but it has been so under engineered its just destroying itself.

better chance of having a later engin on the 06 some of they are notorious for heads going ( think its on a sticky )

I was thinking that I'd it's got over 100k on it most problems will have shown up and, given it was a fleet vehicle, fixed ...

go for the 05 DSG! i myself am a fan of manual but the spec in the 05 is much higher. Plus bare in mind that the car is a DSG so it already has the highline steering control module in it so should you want to install a MFSW later you can do so by just getting the wheel and the MF cable for the airbag (£25 part)

the armrest is another easy mod that can be added in so its a real no brainer...

i have an 05 sportback that had Bose, half leather and Double Din symphony unit as standard which was a good base to start from and have installed all the mods in my sig since.

Ok think I'm going to go got the 05. Is 5800 an ok price ? Has full ASH cambelt and last service done 50 miles ago, 3 months warranty, s line pack, Bose, DSG with paddles and auto lights and wipers

you forget to say one of the most important things about the car to define the price... whats the mileage??!

Also how much is the asking price?

i would go in at £5.5k, as mileage is fairly high... i got mine around his asking price when the mileage was at 99k, just as a guide line.

try and pick out faults with the car to see if you can get any lower on the price, also look out for any smells in the engine bay.
very common thing also sit in the car with the engine running and try to see if you notice a judder while its idle? maybe even have it on a hill and if it does use that to haggle the price down.

how much tax/mot does it have?

Ok thanks for that. Anything else I should be looking out for in particular? It's taxed and MOTd until may 2012 I think

ermmm... only things that come to mind now are tyre tread, make sure its all ok
and drive slowly around town with the window open and radio down/off to listen out for any noises from the engine bay. anything sounding like a police siren and there are turbo issues!

oh and test out the classic limp mode! floor that baby and see how long she can go on for :)

might be a good idea to take a note with you on all the things to check as its easily forgotten but very important to check.

engine judder whilst stationary is annoying but not a major problem, however turbo issues and limp mode can be something major
Would be ideal if you could get that car scanned prior to buying...

that being said the car sounds like it has been taken care of, so good luck to you mate

Yeah make sure you listen out for the turbo! If its making a whining/siren noise its the turbo on its way out. This wont neccesarly throw you into limp mode, so its hard to notice. When i bought mine i was hammering it on the test drive and it didnt go into limp mode, it only went into limp mode about a month after when i was on the motorway. Trick is to hover it around the 1500rpm mark in first or second and listen out for the noise.

i drove one as a test drive before i bought my one and as i was driving slowly around town in traffic it sounded like i was being approached by police! had me paranoid as i kept looking in the mirror for lights and when to get out of the way...
the owner obviously tried to hide the fact it happens by 'showing' me how loud the stereo was but i turned it down to hear him better only to hear the other noise. i was surprised at how he said he can't hear anything when it was loud enough for people on the street to think you are an undercover police car!
