Water Sucked into S3 Engine

Cod only knows what you have done to the engine, you garage could be throwing you a red herring though, so the second opinion may throw something up.

You could Perch it up some axle stands, take the 2 front eels off and have a flounder about underneath. If all else fails hit it with a hammerhead and ride your pike to work for a few weeks until you find a replacement engine.

Congrats mate, I don't know that much about fishing, but that was reely useful info.

Also, the car is not Dolphin Grey, is it?

We should probably stop monk'ying around, lets fin'ish this now before he gets taken hook, line and sinker.

I did not know you could claim on the insurance for engine damage? be careful you dont have undeclared mods as insurance co,s are sticklebacks for that kind of thing...

You sure can, my old boss did on my works van when I went through a puddle that was 3ft deep..... But I got a yaris until it was fixed which wasn't funny!!

You sure it's a S3 and not an S.S.3?? I think we are all aboard here in saying It's reely unlikley a puddle caused the damage. I think you need to set sail to another garage as the one whoever suggested water damage seems like a bit of a drip.

Well done CLSmooth for ignoring this bunch of cheeky buggers lol...

Bad times mate... hydrolock on a std airbox would be pretty unlucky unless there was a leak (and a big one) elsewhere... TIPs (turbo inlet pipe) have been known to split or be loose enough to draw air in and could well be in a position to draw water in... that said the std air intake horn is in the wing cavity and its plausible that a big enough splash could have found its way up there...

Hope it gets sorted ok for you...

Tuffty thanks for your response, I wasn't going to rise to the bait so to speak!

I have another garage looking so I will let the piranahas know what happened.

Cheers,

Yeah i hope it is not as bad as first thought mate, ive heard of the RAC looking into the oil filler to see if the tappets are moving and condemming an engine, even though you cant see anything as it has a splash guard....:haudrauf:........;)

Theyll obviously come to the conclusion that the camshafts have disintergrated so has to be written off.... Lol

Update on this and a warning to all S3 drivers.

Water found in the pre turbo inlet and the air filter. A slight amount of water (less than half a cup) had got into engine and was unable to compress. This stripped the cam belt (8000 miles old) of a large amount of teeth. In turn with the engine now out of time the pistons contacted and damaged 12 of the valves in the top of the engine. Valves require replacing and new cam belt required, should be able to be rebuilt.

Watch of for those puddles guys!

Oh and forgot to mention, the fully comp insurance I had did not pay out!!

TBH i didnt expect your insurance to pay out for damage like that.

Sounds seriously unlucky to get water in there!

I'd be replacing the con rods too, irrespective of whether they appear to be straight or not.

Find it totally bizzare how so much water can get past a standard airbox and filter in a matter of what must have been a second or 2....
Split IC pipe is a good shout as it would have been sucking like a mofo....maybe worth checking CLS ?

Wow, at least you find out what caused the problem. How long till its back on the road?

think its time u got urself a badger5 v2 to prevent future splits etc

u could get a filter sock aswell if ur really paranoid

I'd get one of these fitted if I were you......

If he's in the market for a new engine, he might not want to splash out on a b5 tip at the same time...:undwech:

My wee brother did EXACTLY the same in his 206 gti 180 a couple years ago

Hit standing water and sucked up a load through the air intake.

Insurance priced an engine, was deemed uneconomical repair, HOWEVER they paid out and wrote the car off.

Time to get in about your paper work matey, i would be pressing the insurance.

Flippin' eck, that's unlucky! Glad you're getting it sorted but it's a shame your insurance company are trying to reel you in. That's certainly a lot of water to take in through a potentially small gap in just a shake of a tail's time, did they Find Nemo in there too? As above I'd change your con rods too whilst you're there just incase. If you fish around you'll be able to get them out easily enough.

Hi all, haven't been on here for a while. Getting it back on the road on Monday. Damage to valves wasn't substantial so I left the con rod as there are. I will see what the damage is before chasing the insurance because my excess was 500 quid anyway. Might not we worth the hassle with those wasters. If anyone is with Admiral... beware.
