i was happy with my s3 until.......

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif me that's a nice car... think my next car is going to be an S2000, just can't decide how soon!

anyone else got any suggestions for under 20k, would prefer to have warranty, but not essential.

so far...

S2000 02 on
NSX
M5 400BHP
old boxster
old 911
elise
vx220
caterham...

doesn't have to be practical or good mpg but needs to be useable for my 16 mile journey to and from work... and not break down too often!

I've got exactly the same list except the M5 (too heavy) and the old boxster (no real porsche for me) and then also an M3 E30 and Exige
I have to admit that a 993 or a Exige/Elise have a clear edge now...
I may go for the cheaper options (15k for VX, M3, S2000, Caterham) only to spend the remainder (5k) on racing lessons, fuel, insurance, spares (and mistakes...) and track expense

E30 M3's are not all that really.. ive been out in a few and didnt think much of them plus you got to wind them up to get going. not all that fast really.. old technology and quality..

think a 99 M3 Evo would be pretty good, was looking at one when I got the S3, I'm thinking something more impractical, or just silly like the M5, quicker than an S3 and twice the size!

just need to save up to go on the gumball rally after I get the car! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_2.gif

it's either that or very big turbo conversion for the S3...

M5 all the way if you can. great cars and have dropped alot in price, get a later one with wide screen sat nav etc. well built cars..

test drove a s2000 but went for the S3 just better all round, S2000 is nice and drives well but it is a bit cramped if your over 6ft

The thing is you'll go out and get an S2000 and then miss the comfort and 4WD of the S3. Well, as soon as you back end it somewhere and scare the the /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif out of yourself. Maybe that's part of the fun and if I could have a 2nd car reckon elise or vx220 turbo would be in my garage.

Really, unless your upgrading to a different performance level it won't be a big enough hit. I really believe that and won't be changing mine unless it's for a 911 or even an M3 (the latest model).

Drove the S2000 before the S3 ... nice car but couldn't live with having to rev the nuts off it to go anywhere quick ... it's playful in the dry, downright lethal in the wet.

A

i think id probably go back to two cars, one for nice weather and just a crapper for doing everything else.
and one car id like to drive is a delta integrale evo, one of my all time faves

id go caterham all day long, i used to do work on 1, 2ltr 16v vauxhall engine on twin 45's, it was pulling 225bhp, all i can say is what a car, i lent it 1 nite from work, thirsty on fuel but worth every pound, fastest excellerating car ive drove
they just arnt very user friendly, but who cares

I was considering an s2000 until I actually sat in one.
I'm 6'2" and had to be shoe horned out!
I'm not fat either before any wise cracks!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It's a nice motor but not for me.

I got the S3 because I wanted performance without sacrificing cabin space.

The S2000 is a 2 seater sports car so I never considered it, this type of car does nothing for me. M3 will probably be my next car - a few years away yet I think.

... to me an audi has an air of prestege and quality that a Honda just doesnt have for my money...

S2000 with funny steering?

its a jap import for a start, so that will be grey import insurance hassel(and cost) for a car (except for steering) available in the UK anyway.

never really been keen on these cars, they need to be revved to death to get any go.

tho i will admit they do sound nice, and Honda has an impecable record with their vtec units

I've had two S2000s. Completely different cars, not really comparable. Trouble is with the S2000 is all or nothing and to get the most out of it you need to be raping it all the time. Two disadvantages with that are the roads arent really long enough to be fluid in the car and coming out of a corner the power delivery is not always there unlike with a turbo or other high torque cars.

My last S3 was quicker round the same track than the S2000 by 4 seconds and my Focus RS 5 seconds quicker.

S2000 is a great car but not all that. There is something missing on them.

thanks... i just liked the look of it

i know the engine is a bit hit and miss

when are audi gonna bring out a nice sport little car that handles well?? i.e NOT the TT

Having driven most of these I would narrow your list down to:

1. vx220 - Nice little sports car for the money, if you don't mind the vaux(cough)hall badge
2. old boxster - 2.7 not the fastest thing on earth but feels special and handles amazing
3. old 911 - I like the 993 turbo. A lot!

The others I wouldn't bother thinking about
* S2000 - Needs thraping all the time, inside built for small Japanese people I think
* NSX - Not driven, too expensive for performance IMO.
* M5 400BHP - Too thirsty for petrol & oil, good in every other way. Not a real 'sports car'
* Elise - Good but VX220 is better IMHO
* Caterham - Track or Sunday car to me. R500 is bonkers
