As title had loss of power yesterday took it to my local specialist and diagnostics reveal faulty ERG valve, with a cost of £200 odd pounds + labour to repair. Was wondering if the valve can be sourced cheaper. Total cost for repair is near £400.

Spoke with mechanic and he said its a common fault, nothing to worry about. Used the place on a few occasions and they seem really good. Just really wondering if anyone had this fault and if there were alternatives.
if its the type that have a little 2cm flap that turns on a little axle? then yes ive replaced a few at work the flap head falls off leaving the valve completely open. engine coughs spluttlers and struggles to run at all.

Labour charge is arond the £70 mark and thats at 1hr 30mins. The valve is around the £250 mark plus gasket and seal + VAT, which brings the total cost in at around £380.
mate they are easy to fit albeit im a mechanic but only took me 30mins to change it, where bouts are you? i got a brand new egr valve from a company off ebay for £175. if your near berkshire ill fit it for ya for a small fee.

Can a anyone shed some light on how to replace this or check it its faulty im suspecting this my be my problem with random loss of power dont want to spend the stealer prices would much prefer to get my hands dirty any suggestions i have 2.0 TDI
its located on the inlet manifold( the right hand side of the rocker cover), and is held on by 4 torx screw bolts the back two are a pain to get on. Removed the 2 electrical plugs,undo the intercooler hose and the two allen key bolts for the breather pipe and it will come out, There is 2 butterfly valves they should both be free but under slight tension. if these are ok there is a black cover on the electrical part of the valve, one of the screws has sealant in it to prevent it from opening, just pick the sealant out with a pick tool or tiny screwdiver etc, once all the screws are out pull the cover off and you with see plastic gears, its common for these gears to grind the teeth off, and therefore making it hard to open the smaller butterfly valve when needed. hope this helps.

ive posted above how to remove it, to clean it just use a flat blade screwdriver or something like that as the the valve gets blocked by carbon basically oil and air, this is like a thick resin so screwdrivers work well and maybe some hot water or brake cleaner in a can if you have any.
