Went to empty out my catch tank and noticed this all over the passenger side drivershaft and subframe.

If it is the cv joint, should I replace just the cj joint or would it be worth doing the whole drivershaft?

ok I've got a 30mm 12 socket from halfords.will this remove the hub bolt?also can anyone tell me what else I need?

any PAS pipes near there? thats looks like the gunk i saw when mine failed on my old car

Looks too brown to be CV grease, CV grease is normally jet black

If it is the cv boot then audi kits are reasonable price just the clips can be tricky to get tight so the right tool for them is a good buy.

Is it a S3 ?? if so the center bolt is a stretch bolt that you get new in the audi kit and its either 17 or 19mm hex key / allen key.

GSF and Euro often supply the wrong kits for S3`s so better going to audi imo

I'd say that is leakage from the catch can.

Too brown for CV grease or any other fluid I can think of really.

Looks like combined oil and water from condensation.

you got a point, now you mention it the catch tank was open from the bottom so that could be it.though there was a lot if oil + WRetch in the tank when I emptied it. I think ill jack it up when u get back from work and have a proper look.if there is no rip in the cv boot and the clips are ok then I guess its the catch tank all along.

only thing though,I'm the last picture with it on my hand,it was really thick so not sure if that would come out if the catch tank?.will update later, thanks for input guys

right I got everything need to fuzz the leaked.its the cv boot.will I be ok driving it 100miles tonight then fix it 2mz

Its always risky, the damage could already be done or you might be ok its not something you can say just guess and flip a coin

ok I see,I got everything to change it but the bolt is soooo solid! don't get me wrong I'm no weaklin even dad had a try. might have to get a garage to use the compressed power tool on it then I can carry on from there

totally wrong colour for a cv joint failure..... that stuff has come from your catch tank or a split or loose breather pipe.... even when gaitor split on CV joints they dont tend to spray out gunk like that as it's really thick grease thats very dark in colour... black sometimes with a slight hint of bottle green to it

That definately looks like crap from the catch can

the catch tank is mounted by the passenger headlights so not to sure how it got all over the cv joint.I need to get it up on a ramp and see what's going on.cheers lads
