Hi All,

I have an A6 1.9TDI Avant Sport with the Multi gearbox.

I've had it 6 months and the best I've acheived todate is 38mpg - and that was on holiday with a decent run.
As a norm I'm getting 34mpg - I had the same car in SE trim and manual box and it averaged 44mpg from new for 56K miles.

Audi keep telling me it will improve, but it's not getting any better after 6K.

Anyone else got any experience - I know someone who had a 2.5TDI Multi and he could get over 40 on a run.

I am doing quite a bit of town driving.

I have a 2004 avant se 130multi and always get 41 mpg average. I have now done 19000 miles and it never varies no matter what kind of driving I do. I would think that your engine does need to be run in a liitle more.
 
I know I'm a bit late for this discussion, but.........

We've had an A6 1.9 TDI multi since July & I must say the economy isn't what I expected. It's an '05 54 model and had vovered 7800 miles when we bought it - it's now done about 12000 miles. It's averaged 38 mpg since we've had it.

The wife usually drives the car and generally does short trips into town of about 6 miles. She does tend to get her foot down, and with a multitronic, you don't realise how quickly the car is accelerating. I'm sure the car is driven harder than a manual version would be.

After having owned an early A4 with 1.9 TDI 110 with manual trans, which delivered a solid 48 mpg, the A6 is a little disappointing.

I guess it is a heavy car, and the economy may improve with further use. Also I'm due to do some longer journies in it soon.

Is there any settings in the multi controller that can be changed by the dealer ?
 
I have a 2.5tdi multi and I get 32-36mpg where my old 2.5tdi manual would do 35-38.

I agree with the statement that you tend to accelerate harder in the multi and I think this is where it hurts the economy.
 
I got a A6 1.9 TDi manual and now average 45mpg. However, before I fitted 17" alloys I used to get 51mpg. You tend not to realise how much of a difference these things make...........
 
I have 1.9TDI (Sport, 17" alloys), with 6sp manual, now with 27k on the clock. I also average around 38-39. On v. long motorway trips in UK, I can get 42 - in France it was 36 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. 6sp manual has fuel economy hit (5-10%) over 5sp manual - but should be very similar to Multi. Also, if your car is doing mostly short trips that will hurt economy - we recenly moved house to much closer to work (7 miles) and fuel economy definitely worse - the water/oil don't even get up to temperature. Expect another hit from using the aircon.

As you point out, the car is heavier than A4 - but then you also have an engine putting out 310 lbft of torque /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I have a 1.9TDi Multi avant and usually get around 35mpg, if I do a longer run I can get 42ish if I am careful.
However over the last few weeks when the weather has been colder it is down to 32mpg, however we are doing a lot of short trips at the moment, 8 miles down the dual carridgeways then 4 miles through traffic and then straight back out again which doesn't help.

I also had my car Revo'd about two weeks ago, this doesn't effect fuel economy too much when driving normally, but the first tankfull after the remap was 29 on the D.I.S ! But it was fun.

One funny thing is our 3.0 Cab used to return 33mpg when cruising at 85mph on the motorway, the 1.9TDi only just manages 32mpg at this speed, and our 2.5TDi A4 avant used to manage 36ish at the same speed.
The A3 S-line would be mid 40's doing the same, and our A2 TDi (90ps) would be about 38mpg.

If you cruise round on A roads all day long the 1.9TDi A6 avant is great, but stop start driving on such a heavy car is going to kill any chance of decent economy, and that is the problem with going with the official figures, they are done with hardly any stop start driving.

I would say sod the economy and get it Revo'd, 170bhp and it pulls like a train, feels quicker than the 2.5tdi and it doesnt have a heavy lump over the front either. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I've only just had a look back on this site, and see that my original posting has had a few more replies!

Mine has now done about 17,500miles and during the summer averaged about 36-38, peaking at around 42 - and now its back into the winter, its returning about 33-34.

I generally do short trips (8mile) through town - that or a 18mile run down the motorway to the office.

At least mine seems to match you all on here.

And I would agree about accelerating harder with the multi.

I just wish that when I drive in me slippers and keep below 2000rpm that the economy would improve - but it doesn't - so I keep me slippers at home!!
 
At least you know you aren't getting hammered at the pumps just for enjoying the car!
 
My car is currently doing about 39mpg.

70% Motorway/30% Town

Done half a tank this week and I've got 240 miles from it.

Im quite dubious about Audi's claim that multitronic returns the same mpg as a manual.

A VW Passat owner from the local tyre place said he chipped his 1.9 TDI and it now returns 10 mpg more than before (now 54mpg). Bull****?

Has he chipped it or put a tuning box on? every tuning box I have ever used makes the OBC over read by about 25% on actual mpg.
 
Well, we seem to have just proved it - we appear to have the same car but yours is multi, mine 6sp man - both avge around 39mpg mixed driving.
 
One thing to note is BMW, Audi etc. all say the same thing, that their cars use 40% more fuel before they have reached optimum temperature, now if you only do say 1 mile to a dual carridgeway, 5 miles down the dual and then another mile through town before reaching your destination and the same on the way back home each day I bet you use 25-30% more petrol than someone who does the same but with a 10 mile dual carridgeway run in the middle.

I currently have an A6 avant Tdi which is REVO'd and if I reset my computer in the morning and drive into town (doing the above journey) I get there with 32mpg on the clock. If however I go round the ring road to another office which is only 4 miles more it is up to 39mpg.
If I go the other direction up the dual carrigeway to a supplier that is only 15 miles away it always shows 42mpg.
Drive up to the coast and I can get 45mpg no problem.

My cars oil temp has not reached its optimum by the time I have reached town on a morning at the moment, and that is a 7 mile journey, so it has to cripple fuel economy.
 
My computer generally reads 42 -44mpg

Hardly go on the motorway, mainly driving on A roads.
