Hi All,
Can anyone give me any advice? I'm about to go and view an Audi A4 1.8T S line 190bhp. Its a 54 plate however, I am also looking at the A4 1.9 tdi. It will be a toss up when I've test drove the both of them and worked out how much the s line will dent the wallet! Anyone have experience of these models who could offer their experience? Also, are there any common faults to look out for with these models?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I have the 1.8T Quattro S-Line 190 6 speed 2004, great car, a good tunable engine, 220 BHP with a re-map. The oil pickup can block due to infrequent oil changes and not letting the turbo spool and cool, coils can break down (now done under recall work) the road tax is quire high, mine is 226g/km which officially puts it into group L (£435 ish a year) but as it was registered before march 2006, the government have put it back a group into K which is £235 ish a year. The diesel will be cheaper to tax and do more MPG.

On a long run i can squeeze 37MPG, normally 33MPG, can drop when driven enthusiastically!!! If i were you i would drive both and see what you prefer. I bought a petrol as i don't do too many miles and i hate the sound of a diesel.

When you view the S-Line it's worth checking the V5 to make sure it's a real one, there seems to be a lot of confusion over what's a genuine model.

The 1.9TDi will comfortably remap to 170bhp and in real world driving would be similarly paced.

With the 190 make sure you check the service history, check the oil filler cap, look for black deposits could be a sign of sludge due to not changing the oil enough, the oil in these engines should be changed every 6mths or 5k, thats when i do mine. Check when the cambelt and waterpump were changed, should be done at 70k or every 5 yrs thats a £400 job at audi. Apart from the oil thing these cars are great had mine for 4 yrs now..

Depends on the mileage you are doing, for me it was the 1.9Tdi as I had fairly high mileage each year with 60miles average per day. If it were less than 50/day I'd go for petrol. But if the price difference is high and the diesel is a lot higher then work out your miles to see is it worth it. For the extra few grand a diesel has in premium on new cars you have to complete around 100,000 mile to work the fuels saving back....in Ireland anyhow ;)
