Has anyone compared a tuned S3 Sportback (stage 1 or 2) with a stock RS3? I have a S3 Sportback - 2010 with ABT chip and a Milltek catback and a friend of mine has orderd the new RS3. Will i keep up? :)

Pretty close, but as said DSG vs. manual could be the deciding factor.

When you get to over 300bhp, a few bhp doesn't make an enormous difference on the road (with wind resistence / driver skill / state of tune / how long since last service etc.) taken into account.

I have a manual and the chip from ABT = 310 hk + a Milltek resonated catback. I dont know how much the Milltek exhaust give but around 10-15 hk probably so about 320-325 hk.

point to point, there is prob very little in it, the RS3 may have it due to the better braking system and suspension, when it comes to a hard launch, again the RS3 would prob have it due to it having launch control and the almost instant gear changes the DSG box offers unless very fast on the manual box

Boydie: How do you describe stage 2+? Is it just chip and exhaust or is it more components involved?

Stage 2 the RS3 and its.... :undwech:

And stage 3+ you'll have an R8 V10 muncher!!!!

I know i know i know ;-). But now we are talking about a stock RS3 not a stage,1,2, or 3 :).

And as good as the RS3 car is, and lets be honest it's a ****** good car, at £45k-48k you can buy cars that may not outdrag it, but they have a lot more 'feel good factor'. I love my S3, but I never forget it started out life as an A3 base model, and is not some 'skunkworks honed' bespoke racer. It's a very high spec shopping trolley.

I'd take the 'slower' R8 in a heartbeat just because of the way it looks, so whilst the R8 comparisons are good game, the RS3 is really a marketeers dream rather than something that starts out life with a bespoke platform like an M3 (which doesn't borrow so much from its cheaper stable mate). That said, when they're in the 30k's I may well try one (if I can resist the TT-RS)

Its still going to take some beating. As jungle explained, everything to do with the RS3 from brakes to launch control explains its price tag, even if it is a little steep.

I don't disagree, but all the tech is just masking the shortcomings of an 8+ year old platform. Having lived with a Stg2+ S3 for 4.5 years it has some handling, braking and reliability limitations, but on the whole she's a sound enough car, and still sits up there with the better hyper hatches. The RS3 will be much better as it isn't an 'over stretched Golf GTi', but it still shares the aged platform / chassis set up.

This is always going to be the way though.....Stg2+ S3 will beat or at least equal a stock RS3....Stg1/2 RS3 will have the Stg2+ S3.
Stg3 S3 will have the mapped RS3 and so on.......from stock, the S3 is OK,but if you take it a good bit further,it does need a good bit of work on the suspension, handling and brakes, but at that sort of level, you have a 450+bhp shopping trolley which will give a lot of bigger/better cars a real shock.
It all depends on what you want or need.

Think we posted at the same time warren! I agree with everything you've said. Bit disappointing that Audi need 8 years of comfort before they introduce something special, then a year later present a new platform and another 8 years of comfort.

They always do this though, don't they....the RS model of any range only gets trotted out at the end of that particular car's run,and just before the new one appears, and it seems to be a sort of Audi tradition...

 I knew one of these threads would come up sooner or later. I'd like to see a video of them both at GTI International next year!

Does that mean a new TT is on the horizon already then?

Is the Platform setup really the same in S3 and the RS3 though? I still have not made up my mind if i should go for the RS3 or get the S3 till the new S3 is out and change to that. If i go for the RS3 i think ill be keeping that for a good while.

It depends as I said before on what you want.

The S3 is cheaper, and currently has the widest range of tuning bits, plus the biggest horsepower,if that's what you're after.

RS3 tuning is still in the early stages, and a lot of companies are struggling to get beyond 500bhp,but APR and I would imagine Stasis/Revo will see to that in time, but at huge cost.

There are always a lot of angles to a choice like this....some people like 5 doors, some dont, some like the RS styling, some dont, and so on.

It's a difficult choice, and I'm not sure which I'd choose right now, even leaving the 5 doors thing out of it.

Seems my wife went toe to toe with an RS3 yesterday and smoked it. But since lm grounded l can only vouch for her interpretation of what a RS3 looks like, but she was adament.

I recently came head to head with one on the M5 near Cheltenham (it was a car from Bath Audi), and it couldn't pull from me, and I couldn't gain on it. I have manual, it obviously has DSG. I'm @ stage 1.

Next to nothing in it on straight runs, but would have been interesting to see on something more curly. As I'm running the RS's wheels and have Eibach Pro's I hope it would be close, but it's hard to say.

I'd say the RS might have more sustainable long term consistency of power delivery. Whether heat soak would wear the S3 down eventually?????

Now that,I do like.....

Mine would be more likely to run the other car off the road, and anything else in the vicinity.

In gear, there won't be much in it. As soon as you bring gear changes in, the DSG will start to tell. DSG is significantly faster than manual in gear changes (about a second faster through the gears, unless you're VERY quick with the manual box)

Outright drag racing, the RS3's DSG, and launch control will win.

Round bends the RS3s suspension and DSG will win it with the same driver.

Stage 2 S3 vs stock RS3 with DSG should be comparable - launch control will give a little advantage, and the suspension setup might help through the bends, but the bravery/ability of the driver will make more difference.

Hi nathan i,m running stage 2+ about 350-360 bhp and well s3alex is running stage3 440bhp ....:)

Nate's talking in Shark terms not Revo, they have 3 instead of 2+ so I guess Alex's is equivalent to Shark 4?

Hi martin right shark 3&4 rules..:) hi nathan got my brakes sorted just need new rotors and pads ...

He is yeah, and I know what you guys are all running

Well share the love, I don't have a clue what map is on mine

Need to sort the suspension before I go 2+/Shark3, and need to furnish a flat before I can do that!

Lol i,m in the same position , trying to get the car all sorted plus 2 bedrooms to sort out at the same time...

Actually a bit more now.....Revo Stage4,which is for engines with internals upgraded and running an external boost controller.
We've had to turn the boost back a bit as the clutch was slipping, but it's about 480bhp now, with more to come when the boost is up to 2bar.
