Afternoon all,
I recently had the car scanned because of the EML coming on and it came up with a fuel fault, system to lean, I'll put the code up when I get a chance later, there was also a fault with regard to the N249 mechanical failure. The N249 has recently been replaced by the previous owner.
I have also noticed now I have fixed my passenger window that the dv/turbo is fluttering when I let off of the accelerator, are these faults linked?

And if it is the DV is it worth upgrading to a Forge 007p or sticking to the standard Bosch one, the car is totally standard.

Thanks for any advice.

forge one will last swap it. Speak to S3BAM he will get u the best price.

standard will be fine for a while

buy an ebay recirc DV i have, not tried it yet but look/feels good qualit and well madejust like a 007p but only £30 lol, two spring, ally, rated to 40psi

i just need to try it now lol, check my build thread for an update soon when its on

Engine fault codes from the scan are:
17608- Mechanical malfunction

17544- Fuel trim bank 1 (add) system too lean

Would these cause the fluttering noise?

Its an S3 2001 facelift if that helps.

All IMHO but the fluttering sound is air being forced back through the turbo when you lift off where it should be being released by the DV, either back into the system if using a recirc valve or to the atmosphere if using a vta. It can cause the turbo to stall which isn't a good thing but I do read about it quite a lot on here so maybe it is something inherent with the S3 and they are built to take it? It can be more noticeable if a different air filter/induction kit is used but might a different spring in the dv help? Maybe a slightly softer one?? Just some thoughts and I'm happy to be corrected on anything!

define turbo stall please, and how it actually feels when driving the car,

had the exact same problem with my a3, swapped the DV for a forge 007p and a nice K&N filter to be able to hear it still (Yes, i know it sucks in hot air) but the flutter that i had went away and i now get a nice wooooosh sound. I have also had the same running lean problem before and after the modifications and it still does it now. Im taking it to a garage towards the end of this week to hopfully sort out boost problems and the running lean problem too. ill let you know what the running lean problem was.

define turbo stall please, and how it actually feels when driving the car,

You wouldn't actually feel it, as you accelerate the turbo starts to spool up so it's forcing air into the engine so you will have a positive pressure on the engine side of the turbo. This will be maintained as long as the turbo is spinning at the same rate. When you change up a gear you no longer have the exhaust gases to spin the turbo at the same speed and so the air which had been being forced into the engine will now force itself back through the vanes causing turbo stall (compressor surge) making the fluttering sound. AFAIK the dv releases the excess pressure between gear changes to keep the turbo spinning so it's ready to go again. The recirc type will route it back into the system to help it spool up again and the vent to atmosphere just release it to give the characteristic whoosh sound. I'm not a mechanic but that's my understanding of it, I'm not too sure of the correct technical terms, but hope that makes sense.

^ Close but compressor stall and surge are 2 different things that happen in different circumstances .

Compressor stall is what happens when the throttle is closed and the compressed charge air passes back through the turbo giving the chattering sound. On some cars this is a problem on others it is not. My old Fiesta chattered like a good in. Search "Fiesta RS Turbo chatter" on YouTube for a couple of clips.

Compressor surge is when under full throttle the engine consumes the boost quicker than the turbo can produce it.

Thanks mate, would be interesting to hear the outcome.
