After reading thread after thread im just getting in a pickle!

Mainly as im seeing / being made aware of faults with the 2.0 TDI engines :( and just getting paranoid as these issues dont seem to be cheap fixes either.

After what ive read I think I might just stick to looking at the 1.9 TDI Variants, Are the 2.0 TDI really that bad? The problem I have is with my budget the ones im looking at are all around 05 / 55 plates and these seem to be the one with the problems and the main reason im looking to change is for more realiabilty

what to do!

i allways thought the 2.0 TDI was an improvment over the 1.9
not had any issues with mine for nearly 2 years of ownership.
just be sensable with what you can get with your money and if possible, gett an 06 or later :)

Its not as bad as you think mate, your only reading the bad stuff because no one starts a thread to say "had my 2.0tdi for 2 years now and nothing gone wrong"

i have a 140 mapped and so far its been fault less but it is an 07 plate with 65k on it now.

just try and find a good one with FASH and you should be ok.

avaoid the 170bhp if your that concerned or better yet like you say get a bullet proof 1.9 if your not fussed for speed.

yeah think im just working myself up a bit, do want a bit of poke so the 140 from the start is the one ive been looking at (will prob end up getting it mapped as well at some point once i find the right one!)

well ive got the day off tomorrow so going to try and view a few test drive etc :)

What do you drive now mate? If you want one bad enough you'll fall in live at a test drive, there so nice, best car iv ever had and iv had a few!

i work for a vw/audi specialist and the 140 are great, some faults but thats the same as any vehicle. the 170 have injector issues and injectors are approx £480 plus vat just for parts retail. If you're that worried get a warranty. We also change a few turbo's but don't let that put you off

I've had my 2.0tdi (140) cab s-line for over a year and i still enjoy it as much as the day i got it.

Keep looking , took me about 7 months to find the 'right' one you won'y regret it .

All I will suggest is don't get one with a DPF filter as there a nightmare and seem to be a time bomb.

If you get on your quite worried about get a warranty through warranty direct or your insurance company, should be about £400 a year.

after longing and looking for an a4, one i specifically wanted was the 2.0 tdi 140bhp avant s-line! and ive bought one, bre engine, had it 2 weeks now and still makes me grin when i get in it! so smooth, soiled, eveything seems tight! me being a previous taxi driver its made me hate driving but i could sit in this audi, drive it for ever and never get out of it, so nice to drive, also being an s-line its a very sexy looking car!
i was aware about the faults but i could'nt help buying one, its abit like falling in love with a bad b1tch and you seemed gripped into her powers!

its has made me paranoid tho and reading the horror storys has made me feeling sick! but then ive been speaking to my mate today, he has a golf gti 2.0 tdi 140, same engine as the audis, he said if you listen to eveything you'll never get what you want in life!

Iv had an A3 t sport and now A4. They were both first cars I looked at/test drove. Guess I am impulsive!

ALL CARS HAVE FAULTS, I know of a Honda type R with an engine ( very very steady one owner driver) that needed a replacement engine at 45K. This was three months out of warrany and Honda would only offer the owner a goodwill gesture of meeting half the cost of £5800.
I also know of two Boxters that have needed serious engine work at less than 40k AND I know of one 2.0 tdi BLB engine that had done in excess of 240,000 on the original engine ( I can hear the " I don't believe its " already ).
In summary you pays your money and you take your pick, just get the best you can afford, trust your judgement on the day and ENJOY YOUR CAR.

i wish you all the luck in the world in purchacing an audi....

the key word in the above sentence is "luck"!

Your car is "soiled"? Not sure I like the sound of that.

Well At the moment im driving a 16v Mk2 Golf GTI had a .:R32 before that (that was a shock to the system! going from a V6 to a 1.8 16v) and had a 1.8T before that.

As great as the Mk2 is its better as a wkend toy / project instead of a daily. Just want to get back into a modern car again. Ive Test drove a A3 last wk which was a 140 TDI and loved it, only problem was that it was showing Cyclinder head problems, loads of white smoke on start up and the air con fans stayed on for ages after the car stopped which i read about.

the main reason for a change is so im not having to fix problems every week,

My budget is 7k, but after looking around looks like you have to spend around 8.5k to get what you want

My 2.0 TDI has now got 175,000 miles on the clock and runs perfectly. I did have a new turbo put on it but that is the only problem its had and to be fair I kind of expect things like that with the mileage its covered. Its still completely solid, knock and rattle free and drives just as smooth as it should.

Hey Stink, I went from a Golf 1.8T to the A4 Avant 140. Obviously its not as quick off the mark but from second gear my car picks up very well. Cruising on the motorway is a breeze and there is plenty of power to overtake. I've only got the SE model but have the leather interior which is very comfortable. The S-Lines look the dog's ****** and will have one in the future when I change next. The only issue I've had is it sometime seems slow to change into second. I've had it checked and there is no problems with the clutch or DMF. If they do give up the ghost I will have a remap at the same time. Don't know if know but Rhyso over on Golfgti has a A3 170 now and is now remapping so might be worth and chat with him.
Are you looking at the Avant or the saloon?

Steve

Yeah I know Rhyso very well, about 5 yrs actually :) been getting some advice off him as well re diesels as he had a MKiv TDI before his A3 and he already has been telling me to get a 140 and map it :D

When it comes to saloon or avant i must admit i do really like the Avant and has alot more space and with me being in a band lugging gear around it would help and also ive got a lot of photography kit i carry about when i shoot so again the space is welcome

did test drive another A3 today but after checking the VOSA site turns out the mileage is well less than genuine!!

the hunt continues, I can now see why people have said its taken months to find one!
