Everyone seems to recommend 5W/30 Semi-Synth for the 1.8t but I can get hold of some Millers 5W/40 Full Synth fairly cheaply. Would this be ok to use??
Cheeers

Same here, used to use 5w/30 in the s3 and the engine went frow 15 litres in less than 12 month, swapped over to 5w/40 and not topped it up in nearly 6 months :).

So you wouldn't say there could be any issues with it springing oil leaks with a swap to fully synth? I've heard this can happen with an older engine??

Its a bit of a myth.

Back in the 70s/80s when Synthetic oils were first produced, they had a high concentration of PAO base stocks, which have a tendency to shrink rubber seals. Modern oils have various other additives added to ensure no shrinkage occurs, or are blended with Ester base stocks which tend to swell seals instead.

In short, no modern synthetic oil will cause any problems in any engines these days, but for some reason the old-skool "dont put synthetic oils in old engines" still seems to perpetuate.

The synthetic oil is also much better at handling the thermal demands the turbocharger places on the oil, and its less likely to break down.

Always use synthetic oil! The only thing that you would not be sure to, is about choose 5W40 (the one I use), 5W50 (useful here in Spain) or more probably. the 0W40 one. You are from Wales, and it's a bit cold over there, so I would choose the last one, the 0W40. I think that mobil1 is one of the best, but one of the more expensive oils, i think. But your car will be happy (and the turbo, too!)

Many thanks for all the replies lads.I went for the 5/40 fully synth and all is well. It has made the engine a little more quiet than it was but I really need to replace cam chain tensioner to get it really quiet again!
Cheers

I know this thread is probably closed now but I will add my twopeneth ..

I use the above Mobil 1 0W/40 I know it's expensive but I think the Turbo would benefit from this Grade of oil..

Used it for about 2 Years now..

Some were saying also that they found it to cause leaks because it was quite thin..

Lets face it if you have leaks from any gaskets because you use thinner oil they want sorting out..

Just bought some Halfords are doing a Special offer on Mobil 1
