Would appreciate if any of you with OpenSky on your Sportbacks could post some pictures /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Trying to figure out which colours go with the OS roof and which don't.

Speaking of colours, anyone know what this one is?

Thankyou! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/MexWave.gif

C'mon get serious

handyandyman's pics on fourtitude are of a silver metallic sportback not dolphin grey.

I think Cats' car looks great and went for Ebony Black + OpenSky. If it ever arrives I'll post pics.

The catalogue car is Dolphin Grey. The colour changes with light, looks best in sun light but a bit dull almost non mattalic in dull light.

Just looking at your sig;

thats the two cars we're considering lol! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Volvo D5 SE (+ Auto-box, Paint, Xenons, Parking Sensors) for £22,200 OTR (With discount)

Or the Audi.

I prefer the Sportback, but he's getting an astounding discount (something like 20%?!).

What do you think of the Volvo? Whats making you change to the A3 SB?

When I first encountered the Sportback I wanted it to be that colour that appears in the catalogue. I went to all the dealers I could find and saw Lava Greys, Dolphin Greys, etc. and was never convinced that it was any of them. It should be one of those colours though. However, it's never going to look that colour since the car was more than likely photographed using filters, lighting, etc. Not fair really /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The catalogue car is Dolphin Grey but shot in bright light with porberley extra artrifical lighting. My car looks the same in the right high level of lighting, but looks a lot duller when the light drops.

She does look nice in silver.

Re the wheels - they're the 17" 16 spokes - £355 extra on the Sport model.

An S60 and A3 are strange choices given that they are not 'natural' competitors.
The S60 should compete with the A4,whereas the new S40/V50 is more A3 size.
Have you considered those ?
I test drove the S40 diesel when considering my new car.
It was well equipped (leather and cruise as standard) and performed very well.
The dolby stereo was superb as well.
I finally plumped for the A3 because I love the way it looks in Akoya with the 18 inch S-line wheels.
There was nothing 'wrong' with the S40/V50 at all.

The S60 is one of those wierd mid-category cars that the Scandanavians seem to like. My experience is that it's bigger and (controvertially) more refined than the comparative A4/3 series/C Class. Don't take me to task on this, clearly when you can spend in excess of £40,000 on a top end A4 etc this doesn't stack up - I'm talking about the D5 SE against a 320d SE or an A4 2.5 Tdi SE.

For me the Volvo won hands down on comfort etc but the A4 S-line I had for a 4 day test drive was so much more fun (but no DSG, although apparently it's on its way for the A4)

Compare the S60 against the A6/5 series/E Class and it falls short. Strange thing is the S80 it no better - it's exactly the same car as the S60 with an uglier square boot and chrome grill.

I'd agree though that S60 versus Sportback is a strange comparison. I made a conscious decision to shift vehicle class and try something different.

The blinds are mesh and the front one can be used with the roof back.

The back part does not open in any way but lets in light and with black roof lining on the S Line pack that's a help as without a sun roof it's very dark inside.

Note the opensky is factory fit only. It's at bit expensive but does make the car distinctive and will help resale value but by how much is open to question.

The roof only opens or closes with the switch as with a normal sunroof.

Not according to the manual. The manual reckons that the remote controls the sun roof (Open Sky) in the same way that it controls the windows. Give it a try...

I've now looked at the manual page 81. You can't open the sunroof with the key or remote, but you can close the roof with the key only, not the remote. Very useful I don't think.

You can in the 3dr... I'd be surprised if you couldn't in the SB, would seem a bit of an oversight?

It might be a vag-com option like the auto locking doors. Mine arrived without that turned on and it was the first thing i got the dealer to change.

How opaque is the mesh on the sunroofs?

Not easy to get a picture to give the right impression as the roof is tinted as well as having blinds, this is about the best I could do. The front has the blind across.

i have a sunroof in my A3 and its great. I seem to be one of the minority who actually want sunroof AND climate!.
The Solar roof in my A4 was quite expensive (£900) but it uses the sun to power the cooling fans when its parked up so I thought that wa pretty good and great in the summer especially!.
The roof in the A3 was cheaper but I would definately spec it again. In the S Line, the headlining is black and can make for a very dark interior and this fixes that (although there is a sunshade you can pull over it also).
Well worth the money on the A3.

My local dealer knows I am interested in open sky but really want to see it before ordering.

He phoned me mid morning Saturday & said I could look at it in a car if I could get to garage before lunchtime, it was a sold car & the customer was collecting early afternoon.

Rushed across to garage & had a look. Yes, it is 2 sunroofs ! Asked if I could open roof to see how it works & what opens. "No" as car has been cleaned for customer & dealer couldn't tell me what opens & what doesn't as he's never see open sky before !

Fair enough, if it was my brand new car I wouldn't want strangers jumping in & out, opening & closing & playing with all the gadgets. However, why couldn't he have phoned me on Friday before they cleaned car or told me on the phone I could look but not touch !

Thank heavens I'm aware of this website & able to look at pictures & read advice you all post.

I have learnt far more about A3 from this site than from my dealer who only ever asks if I'm now ready to place order and yes, good news, prices haven't gone up so he can indeed still offer me the 2% discount !

Phew, feel better now I've got that of my chest! In summary, thank you all for your help !

Only 2% discount, I was given over 8% with no problem.

We are definitely in the minority of sunroof and climate. I also have an Sline and it does brighten up the inside.

A question and request for you : I have a problem with my roof / car in that any speed over about 60-65mph with the roof on tilt, I get a wind whistling noise from the rear vertical inside pillar of the driver's door (basically right behind my head around the seatbelt mounting area). It happens whether the blind is closed or open. The passenger side does not display this though. The dealer has tried many times to cure this with no luck (door alignment, door apart, rear of car apart etc...) but it means that I cannot use the sunroof at these speeds or above as it is so frustrating and distracting. It is most obvous on motorways where you can hold a constant speed. They have not had another one in over the last few months with a roof that they can try to compare, so when you are next out would you mind trying this for me and let me know what happens please? I would really appreciate it!

Thanks from one v frustrated driver.

It's not just the dealers. I have an email from Audi UK Customer Service which clearly states that both glass roofs open up - clearly this is toss.

They also told me that the "heated washers" on the auto folding door mirrors were for the headlights. What a bargain that would be given that folding mirrors are £120 and the headlight washers £190 (buy a £120 extra and get a £190 one thrown in for free).

They retracted the statement about the OpenSky when I said I thought they might be talking about the blinds but stuck with the story about the washer jets. Of course, I now know that this refers to the windscreen but I wonder what the legal position would have been if I'd ordered the extra on this basis?

The dealers were just as bad. Admitted they'd never seen an OpenSky but guessed that both roofs "probably" opened up and would I like to order one now. Yeah right...

Thanks for the extra pics. I have sent my proposed spec and price I would like to pay for the car to Crawley Audi. Fingers crossed everything will be good to go on Saturday.

I have done a spec with and without the opensky. The pics have really helped so thanks.

On another point

It worries me that sales execs do not know the cars they sell as well as the customers who buy them. I have put a lot of time researching everything about the car, well almost, and it is disappointing to read a prestige brand does not seem to.

Rob, does it still happen with your seat / headrest at different heights?
Only a thought, but if it helps you could compensate for the height change by altering your seat distance from the wheel.

Not tried this. Will give it a go when I next see my car as the dealer has had it for some time now trying to fix it. I presume you are thinking that the wind movement is being deflected somehow?

Cheers.
