When I first fire up the air-con, I get what smells like bad milk come through the vents for about 5 mins and then it goes away.
Anyone know if this is normal?

I suspect something has been spilt down the vents
You could try one of those air condition cleaners that you put in the car and close doors and run the system it worked for mine
It like a aroesol spray that you leave running " But Shop round for prices as a lot of difference "

Ive tried these before and they do make a slight difference, not sure if it will sort a smell out as bad as your explaining tho

When was the last time your Air filters where changed? i have found in older cars that changing the filters and air con service sorts that out.

I do run my air con regularly to keep the oil circulating etc. I do believe its bacteria that grows on the condensor that causes the smell. Have never tried the spray so I cant comment on if its effective. It is amazing how dirty the pollen filter gets very quickly.
its from the condenser. after you use the aircon, turn the aircon switch off and run it for a couple of minutes and the smell will go away

A can of Comma air con cleaner sorted out the aircon whiff on my old car when I got it. Hellfrauds sell em - other retailers are available...
I found out that there are two types of in-car pollen filter available for the A3. One is just a simple paper pollen filter. The other version is a pollen filter with an activated carbon layer. The carbon type is recommended for cars with air-con, as the carbon should absorb any smells. However, best to clean the condenser first, then fit a new activated carbon filter. That should do the trick.
