Cracked Windscreen :(

Ah today driving to work in the morning on the motorway, I hear a bang against the windscreen, big stone put 2 nasty chips and a tiny crack in the centre of the windscreen.

Not best pleased...I call insurance company to see if it can be repaired, Go out at lunchtime to give them details on the screen...What do i know my little crack and 2 chips have turned into a massive 30cm crack through the middle of the screen.

Onto replacements now going through my insurance but im a bit concerned of the quality of the work. I mentioned to them that i have a dim view mirror and rain sensor pack and they guy on the phone said well have the right one not to worry. Is there anything else i should mention and make sure on when they fit it tomorrow.
 
I had my windscreen replaced on my 11 reg after 1 week (long story and my fault - what a ****), anyway audi replaced mine for nothing (blagged it) but would have charged £80 instead of the standard charge of £70 that normal windscreen replacers charge and I have auto lights, rain sensors and open sky - I was worried too but can't fault their work.
 
am a windscreen fitter just make sure they take the scuttle off thats the big plastic panel thats under your wipers. and make sure they fit a new gel patch. It sits to the screen under your mirror because it does not come off!! it detects the rain hope this helps
 
Well guys mine was replaced, seems they did a good job but two niggles which i need to get onto them about. Firstly theres an air bubble where the interior mirror connects. Guessing thats the gel patch. Secondly my passenger side wiper sits a bit higher than usual!

From what i remember though the guy didnt take the scuttle panel off.
 
The gel bubbles should settle & adjust the wiper yourself, minor issues.
 
Cheers nigel, How do i adjust the wipers seating position, had a quick gander on the net but couldn't find anything?
 
Good old fashioned elbow grease lol, no coding for this, lift bonnet, remove caps covering the nuts holding arms in place, wiggle arms loose & set position & do nut back up, easy peasy.
 
if you take the nut off and just push down where the wiper has a pivot it will loosen it off the spindle
 
Just make sure you keep wiggling the wiper as it may be quite seized.. Dont give up and result to prying off the wiper with a claw hammer which will then crack your scuttle panel and windscreen underneath :D
 
I had a new screen fitted to my old mk4 Golf by National Windscreens, as this is who Admiral use. The job the guy did was fine, but the screen had a horrible distortion in it that actually made passengers feel car sick after a while. It was most noticable for me when you looked at a straight line and you could see a 'kink' in it.
I called them back out and the guy circled the imperfections and took out the screen. He had 2 on his van and both of these had similar distortions in them, but we went with the best one he had. It bugged me until the day I got the Audi and can sell it.

It's totally put me off getting screens changed now. I was going to get the one in the Porsche done as it is covered in chips, but I'd rather not take the risk now.

The screen they were using were Pilkington's Glass which I thought would've been a good brand. I pleaded with them to use a genuine VW screen but they said they couldn't do that.

I've now got a chip in the Audi screen so I'm going to get that sorted before it turns into needing a new screen.
Does anyone know if they should use Genuine screens if I demand it, or are they allowed to just use what they want?
 
if you go through your insurance you can demand a genuine screen but if your paying cash they will use the cheapest well thats what we do we use pilkington's which are normally spot on
 
I phoned the number that was in my Admiral policy documents and it was answered by the National Windscreen people.
I'll try doing what you said next time and sticking to my guns.
 
No need to have oem's tbh, had generics on various cars & never had an issue to date.
 
Just go through a stealer and pay a £10 extra that what you insurance is quoting.

If my chip repair isn't possible (because it's near the edge) then this will definitely be my route
 
I think you would be surprised how few windscreen manufacturers there are. 'Generic' screens are usually made in the same factory as the 'Genuine' ones. The more likely reason for distortion is a bad batch - hence why the other 2 had the same problems.

We had the screen replaced on our Mazda 3 a couple of weeks ago by Autoglass and the car is now quieter and rattles less than it did when it left the factory!!!
