1.8T exhaust manifold?

Hello out there,

Just checking to see what you guys think about exhaust manifolds, I use a ported OEM right now that has a large crack in it and needs replacement. I was thinking about getting the BEX manifold, heard alot good about it. I tried out an ebay "equal length" wich was total junk, and I have an exact copy of the ATP/034/Kinetic/etc wich I can tell from just inspecting how its constructed, that its junk too.

So is there a serious alternative to a BEX, with KKK flange, and that doesnt cost like £1000?

i was looking at them equal length manifolds on ebay, take it it was pants then, safes me some money lol, what was wrong with it

First off, both this and the ATP manifold suffers from the same basic desgin error: The internal flow is completely screwed up. Exhausts from one cylinder is blown directly into another cylinder. It should be designed so every pipe is directed towards the turbo. All good manifolds including the OEM ones are designed that way.

Secondly, they are both really, really hard to mount.

Thridly, the "equal length" one, is using a material of below acceptable standard. Both the turbo and engine block flanges are made of a material that cant handle the heat, causing the bolts to come off, and even if you lock them, the material flexes so much that it leaks.

Ive also heard that the ATP manifold is prone to cracking due to bad design. I cant vouch for that tho, because Im never putting that crap on my car. :puke:
 
The THS manifold is pretty good though i`ve heard. Infact i was talking about it yesterday with a friend and im pretty sure he`d used them before. THS items are very good quality. It might be a copy in design but it wont be an ATP manifold just re-labeled.
 
Well if you want OEM then the BEX manifold is what your after its a little bigger then standard 1.8T's so you should get better flow plus they are very unlikely to crack which is clearly what your after.
 
do you think your mani is restrictive?
what boost and EGT's are you running?
IMO unless you are running insane boost and water meth the OEM bore and design is likely to a few lines down in your list of restrictive elements on a Ko4 equipped car.

what downpipe, intercooler and inlet mani are you running?

the turbo itself has a much more restrictive element than the ex manifold and you may find that if you fitted a truly equal length mani that was well designed that you may get a few more hp on the top end at full chat but you will lose a higher level of mid range torque in that "overtaking" zone.

I bit of restriction in the mani on smaller turbos can help a great deal to even out pulses and keep gas velocity up.
the result is slightly better spool and midrange torque.

what did your ebay mani do to spool levels? dont know why I am even attempting to compare them as I have seen them in the flesh and they are shocking!
even without the inherent reversion built into the design with those manis pictured you have effectively increased tract length and not addressed the restrictive flange size.

my advise is to get a stock one and port it again.

I ported one for a laugh and sold it on eBay. you can get some big chunks of casting out of it and I ended up with a flange bore of approximately 4mm larger than stock, a smoother merge point and no internal casting marks.
left a pile of filings on the floor the size of an apple.
 
I dont think my manifold is restricting, Im just surprised that there are no real alternatives out there. I will get the bex and may have it ported too, will propably be a good alternative. I´m using a 3" DP with 100 cell metallic race kat, an autobahn88 IC(JUNK!) and standard inlet(AEB big port).

If the pictured manifold made any difference I cant really tell, the turbo kept coming off or it leaked. I Have more pictures on it wich I can post if anyones intrested. Could also take detailed pics of the ATP copy, before I sell them both.

EDIT: I should mention that the reason that I checked for mani with higher flow is that I want to get a GT2871 eliminator at a later stage. But I could propably just replace the mani with one that has T3 or T25 flange if so.

not a believer in the eliminator range.
just get a T25 mani
 
Whats wrong with it in your opinion then, the flow restictions that comes with the KKK flange?
 
if you are going to spend the wedge on a bigger compressor then ditch anything related to the OEM turbine housing and manifold.
that is the restriction in the K0x range.
2871 eliminators often perform no better than a decent KO4 rebuild

a cheap T25 manifold and Garrett turbo will give you a much stronger base point to start from
