Front brakes on Audi 1.9TDI 90PS

312mm is the easy bolt on solution for cars fitted with ATE 288mm brakes but they will be too much for your 90 Bhp model. I would look at 288mm ATE brakes from the 110Bhp tdi engines and any other 110Bhp+ model in the VAG line-up, i have fitted a set of those brakes to a b5 90Bhp tdi saloon last year and the brakes on that were better than my quattro's 4 pot Brembo calipers !

288mm vents are a good start, but seen as your wanting to tune it pretty heavily, i'd just go streight for the 312's

You'll still need to find a set of 288mm A4 calipers (TT calipers have smaller pistons), and then use the TT carriers and B6 A4 disks.

The TDis tend to have solid discs, that would be the easiest and quickest way to see.

If you have 288's, then nailing some ds 2500s in would be ideal

No 90 Bhp that i know ever had 288 mm brakes from factory, all had 280mm vented or solid discs and Lucas calipers. The 288mm ATE brakes have a wire clip fitted on the face of the caliper stopping the pads rattle. I would go for 288mm brakes and stock pads and discs, as i said i fitted a set to a b5 audi a4 i had before and the brakes were too much for the car- i used-it for towing at the time ! If yours have solid discs i would upgrade to vented discs regardless of size, you will feel a major improvement in brake fade.

Yeh, if they are actually 288's they've been added my a previous owner. If they're original they'll be 280's with the lucas caliper as Chris says.

I dont believe any car can have too much brakes. I fitted 284mm Vented disks and the appropriate calipers to the front of an old Astra i had. The Astra originally came on 240mm solid disks and had a 1.4 engine with 60hp. The brakes were the best thing about the car, and lets face it, improving the stopping and handling of a car can improve how it drives just as much as adding more power.

Discs are vented will have a look later to see caliper and measure disc. and a photo.

Maybe someone has changed the brakes.

One good find yesterday was some new bilsteins and all front arms new.

I think they fitted vented disks to everything after 1997, but the low spec models got the Lucas caliper and a slightly smaller thinner disk.

This is the ATE caliper used on the 288 setup, note the wire anti-rattle clip:

Will have a look when the mrs gets back with the car.

I also had a Astra Mk3. Mine was a 400bhp C20 LET. I had 288mm standard discs with DS2500 pads and it stopped well. Size isnt the issue with the Audi. I need discs and pads all round(wear and tear) and just thinking if there is a cheap upgrade i could do. Saves doing it twice.

If the discs are 280mm i will just fit 288mm easy.....

What i meant the 90 Bhp with solid front discs have an over compensating servo and master cylinder and you really need to feather the brake pedal otherwise they just on or off. I did the swap on a p reg silver saloon wich i sold easter last year. That was the best running and handling b5 i ever been into, genuine 103 K from new, 1 lady owner from south wales. Bought it off ebay for a song with a blown oil cooler then sold it to a chap from Enfield, N. London. I had too many cars at the time otherwise it would have been a keeper- too good car ! I have fitted new front and rear brakes, new rear wheel bearings and did a full cambelt on it...

I had a full front set up with nearly new ferodo pads that i got rid of recently as well. Was 288mm with the ate callipers.

Chris: The master cylinder and servo is the same on all A4 models!

Are you shure ? If that's true then i have never drove a b5 audi with such strong brakes. I tell you i had to really feather the brakes otherwise it would have sent me trough the windscreen. I have driven many passats b5/b5.5 and these have overservoed brakes as well, the audi's are a bit more progressive.

On the subject of 312mm discs I was thinking of doing this to mine at some stage but wasn't to sure if the 17" bolero's would clear the 312mm disc's and carrier's set up ???

That's nice to no bet they fill the bolero's right up !!
Another job to list now I no that :)
