Hi all,

I have a 1.8t SE AVJ 2001.

I was fitting my new coilovers today, and did the fronts, when I went to move the car in order to do the rears, the car wouldnt move! It starts fine, I can select all gears, but when I try to move in 1st, it doesnt go it just revs like its in neutral. If I move into 1st/2nd without the clutch down, id expect it to stall, but it doesnt. When I do put my clutch down, it lets off a screeching/whining sound and the DIS says "Handbreak On".

I think its all a coincidence but I cant help but blame myself.

Any ideas what it could be?

just a thought though did you need to disconnect the drive shafts to install the coilovers. If ones not reconnected properly the car wont move as its turning through the diff. not sure about the niose though.

im guessing was working fine before hand, hope you get it sorted.

Hi,

I removed the steering link bolts, control arm bolts and the shock bolts. removed the front roll bar bolt also. other than that, didnt remove anything other that suspension components.

Thats odd i have to say, Is it actually selecting a gear, Id check the shafts just to be sure its not popped out. But cars never stop surprizing me, But an instant failure of something with no fore warning sounds odd. esp drive train. Inless theres a sensor or something silly like that cant see it. as they are mechanically linked.Does it not make any noise when shifting gears without the clutch.

it feels like normal when selecting gears, but as soon as I put the clutch down, it makes a screetching sound, i think it may be the clutch thats gone... not sure though, im gonna finish the coilovers tomorrow, and unless I can see something wrong, then Ill have to book it in down the local mechanic.

driveshafts have dislocatad by the sounds of it,either out the box or inside the shaft joint

how can i check if the driveshafts have dislocated? got any pics or what it may look like? sorry havent done any work on gearboxes/clutches etc before...

well if its the shaft in the box itself you'l be able to see it as it will be stuck out much further than the other output shaft on the othe side. Plus if it has come out i would imagine it would be leaking gearbox oil. a driveshaft would be loose and cv boot would be stretched. easiest way if your not sure check it to the other side as you'l have an idea then how it should all look feel. Unless its popped both sides which is unlucky.
The Cv joint is a knuckle the sits inside a cup. and the drive shaft has a spline which locates into the knuckle. which is all hidden under the cv boot. If its popped out at the cv joint you will have to disconect it at the hub wishbone to get enough movement to relocate the shaft.

I hope that helps and makes a little sense. If its not that it sounds like somthing more sinister. But if there was no issues before cant think it could be anything else. Unless you dmf failed massively(quietly!!!!!!) they would normal go bang.

A screeching whining sound usually indicates a clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder failure.

also clutch's dont usualy just work then not work they usually start slipping before they completely go.

There was a little plastic cup that rolled out underneath the car with the tiniest amount of oil in it... apart from that, there was no oil under the car at all, could this sound like the CV joint Jama?

not made off plastic. cv is a metal part, each driveshaft has two cv joints under a rubber boot on each end of drive shaft. but without a pic of this plastic cup cant think what this is. Do a google image search for cv joints that way you'l get an idea of looks. But Is difficult to explain without seeing it. can you change the gears without using the clutch without it gringing or crunching. cuase that would surggest that your clutch is disengaged, but like alan h said maybe slave cyclinder is stuck. it maybe a garage job if your not to sure

I'm at work atm, so when I get home Ill take a picture of the little cup thing, post it up. Also I think I may be able to change gears without the clutch down. One thing I did notice was if it is in gear with the car turned on, the speedometer shows it at around 10-15 mph, but then it also says my handbrake is engaged.

thanks for your help, I may need to drop it off to the garage to get it sorted...

if speed is showing then the passenger side shaft is turning and obv the wheel isnt so i would look at the outer drive shaft and see what turns and what doesnt.

an update, the drive shafts were out on both sides in hub, i somehow managed to put them back in, and it now drives :)

there is one more thing i am having a problem with, while my car was parked up, the battery died, i charged it up, took the car out for a drive, put my fuel needle is showing full (it should be just above half way), does anybody know what this could be? the fuel pump and sender unit was replaced about 1000 miles ago...
