Hi Lads,

New around here and have still get get some pictures of my 1.9 130 -B6 Avant Sport up. Waiting for some good weather and hopefully do it at the weekend.

I have had it a few days and some newbie questions that is probably common knowledge on here:

1. It has a full size DIS, and currently it is telling me that I have XXX miles to empty (well I presume to empty as it just has XXX miles). I was able to change this in my R32 with a button on the end of the stalk to MPG and a few other options, but the indicator stock doesnt have a button to change through them? Is this normal, or has it maybe been replaced with a stalk without the button?

2. It currently has the brake pad limit low warning, the front look good and the back look low. Does this run from front and rear brakes then yeah? I did try to program it out with VagCom but didnt seem to be an option to through recoding. Is there any other ways to do it, as it is quite annoying with the yellow symbol

3. One you hear all the time most likely. The vortex kit. Does the Saloon have a diffrent kit from the Avant, or are the front and rear bumpers the same? I can find Saloon kits online - but no Avant ones so far. Have emailed a few folk though...

4. I bought it with 18" RS6's. How can I tell genuine from replicas?

I think these are most of my inital questions, and im sure there are plenty to come. Will get some photos up soon!

Cheers

Welcome to the forum :)

1) You have the standard DTE (distance to empty) gauge. Full DIS was an option on Sport models. You can retrofit it (quite) simply, there are lots and lots of threads on this.

2) Only the front brakes have wear sensors, possibly a damaged wire? They do come on a bit early sometimes!

3) Re the VOTEX kit, front bumpers are the same between saloon and avant, but the rear bumpers are model specific. Votex bumpers are pretty rare to find anyway as a rule.

4) The easiest way is to take a wheeloff, inside the spoke will be marked Ronal and give the wheel sizes, and possibly the four ring emblem but I'm not 100% on that.

Hope that helps for a start.

2: A weak battery will also give the break pad warning light. Keep the break pressed while you start the car.

In reply to your brakes question, I think they only have the sensors on front..

The inner brake pads maybe worn down and the outside ones fine.

Last two times I've had the brake warning light over the 3 years I've owned it, it turned out the inner pads had worn down. The outer brake pads looked like they had loads of life left.

I have fitted the DIS stalk on my Avant sport, as James says its quite easy to do but you will need vagcom for recoding. Also if you are looking for a secondhand stalk make sure you get one for an avant (has 2 wipers symbols) as the saloon one does not have the rear wiper function. Also look into fitting the washer fluid sensor into the bottle when you do this and wiring it up (cheap and easy to do) as when you add the DIS stalk you will get a screenwash empty warning unless you either fit the sensor or ground pin #1 on the instrument cluster.

For the brake pad warning mine went off with about 5mm of pad left, the sensor wires that trigger the warning are not buried very deep in the pad. Its either they are low or you have a broken wire somewhere. An inspection of the pads will show if the sensors have been starting to be exposed and worn away.

With the Votex kit James is also correct, the front and sideskirts are the same for both avant and saloon but the rear is different as the side length to the rear wheel arch differs between the two body shapes. Also if looking for a votex rear be aware the bumper comes with 2 infill panels allowing for different options for exhaust exits. These infill panels can be bought as either 'with exhaust' or 'without exhaust' for each side of the bumper allowing you to have no exhaust showing, 1 showing or 2 showing.

Another way I assume you can check if the RS6's are reps or not is to pop the centre caps off and see how many mounting holes the wheel has. Most reps have 2 sets of holes (10 in total) to allow them to fit both 5 x100 and 5 x 112 bolt configurations, and I assume genuine wheels would only have one set of holes.
