Hello guys. Not been around for a while. Hope everyones well.....

How do i clear the service inspection message on my 98 pre facelift avant? One other thing, what are the best performance spark plugs for the 2.8 30v?

Cheers Fellas

I still haven't figured it out. Tried all the pushing and pulling of stalks posted here and elsewhere and can't even do it using VCDS (mines a 97 2.8Q)

for early cars you need to do this:

Pre-1998 models ... or if Channel 02 is not available:
[Select]
[17 - Instruments]

[Adaptation - 10]
Enter the correct channel from the list below in "Channel Number"
[Read]
The "Stored Value" is the current value for that channel.
Enter the "New" value of from the list below.
[Test]
[Save]

Channel 05 should be the distance until the next Oil Service.
It is in thousands of kilometers. Let's say you want the Oil
Service light to come on in 5000 miles. That would be 8000 km.
Put the value 8 into channel 05. The "standard value" used by the US
dealers would be 12 (7500 miles).

Channel 06 should be the distance until the next In-1 Service.
Same units as above. Standard value would be 24 (15,000 miles).

Channel 07 should be the time until the next In-1. In-1 lights
up based on time or distance, whichever comes first. This is in
10's of days. Standard value would be 36 for 360 days.

Channel 08 would be time until the next In-2. In-2 is based
strictly on time. Standard value is 72 for 720 days (about
two years).

Later ones you do this:

1998 and Newer:
[Select]
[17 - Instruments]

[Adaptation - 10]
Enter channel 02
[Read]
The "Stored Value" is the current value for that channel.
Enter the "New" value of 0 (zero)
[Test]
[Save]

Note: It is normal for the display to show something like "--/--" instead of an actual distance/time to service after resetting until you have driven some distance.

Phoenix: your cars right on the change over, so try the "newer cars" version first

I had a headache with this on my old v6. I managed it in the end even though I thought I'd followed these instructions to the l-e-t-t-e-r, it just didn't seem to save the values. I think I in the end I had to hit 'save' twice but not totally sure tbh. I know I had to do something very slightly different to the Ross Tech instructions.... sorry I can't be more help

Yeh i think i know what you mean, i've had it act peculiar before, though i cant remember exactly what it was doing.

Those are Vagcom/VCDS instructions, looks like you may need a full registered version to do adaptation.

There is a way to do it from the cluster itself, pushing/pulling one of the knobs, but i've never bothered with that, just crack the vagcom out, and it only works on later cars.

That's brilliant aragorn, I'll give it a go in the morning. The Ross Tech site is a bit shyte as it just details a section in the software I don't have - SRI reset

Oil Service

Press and hold button [A]
Switch ignition ON
The letters "OIL" will appear in the trip recorder display
Release button [A]
Pull out button for approx. 2 seconds to reset the display

INSP - Inspection Service

Press and hold button [A]
Switch ignition ON
The letters "OIL" will appear in the trip recorder display
Release button [A]
Press and release button [A]
The letters "INSP" will appear in thw trip recorder display
Pull out button for approx. 2 seconds to reset the display

At least that's what AD says anyway.

The cluster method only works on later cars.My 96 needs vagcom to reset the service indicators.

Gents, thanks your all legends. I have cleared it before using the dash/button method but couldnt remember how to do it! Done now though so thanks Lewis. Just bought an Alpine active sub, its hoofing! lol! The LM's look good too!

just tried lewis method.
when i press A and turn to on it says OK at the top and SERVICE! in the middle, this doesn't change after 10 seconds
if i release then pull B it proceeds to the time/date change mode.

Mine is a y Reg ie: 2001

am i missing something?

I did mine the other day with the clock buttons, I couldnt get the instructions I found online to work but after some trial and error it reset!
Ive got a feeling I did something like hold A, turn on ignition, let go of A, press B and then turn it left or right?
Its a bit vague, but was pure luck I think lol
