Well after finally sorting out getting my car going how it should, it's just decided to stop stopping properly :( I've just parked it up and it sounded/feels like a handbrake cable has just snapped (handbrake handle now moves up and down freely and it made a snapping type noise).

So, some questions:

- How difficult a job is the handbrake cable(s)?
- Anyone know any rough costs for cables?
- Any special tools required?

I think I'm going to do the 'sharan springs' mod whilst I'm down there (referenced in this thread http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-...ads-discs-sticky-caliper-handbrake-cable.html)

Well, I'll talk to myself then!!

I've ordered a pair of new handbrake cables for the princely sum of £10.52 each, now all I need to do is workout how to fit them....

Well I have an update on this for those who are interested

It turns out that a cable hasn't snapped. It looks like the rear calipers are sticking slightly and it had caused the cables to release themselves from the catch under the lever. Hence I've cancelled the cable order and ordered some Sharan caliper return springs. I'm also going to pick up some new pads and discs for the rear and get 'em suitably greased up.

Just to make you feel a little better, I don't know any answers but well done mate... :)

hi mate,
hope you got the handbrake sorted?? ive recently replaced my rear pads and now the brakes are binding in reverse (only slightly) ive been told easing off on the handbrake adjustment will cure this. so did you come across the cable adjustor when doing your inspections? if so where is it?

Thanks

Yeah I got it sorted without doing much actually. After fitting the Sharan return springs the handbrake now feels great and the rear pads are no longer sticking. I don't know about any adjustment mechanism on the calipers themselves as I didn't get that far but there is a bracket that's adjustable near the handbrake lever (under the rear ashtray) which is accessible from within the cabin...?

Good shout on the return spring upgrade...Do you have the part numbers for the Sharan springs and approx cost fella?

Re: Handbrake Adjustment...

Isn't it automatic in some regard? I.e. if you're pressing the brake pedal hard whilst you pull the handbrake up, the handbrake will be more effective than if you hadn't been pressing the brake pedal?
