hi all

looking for a a4 cabriolet with an auto box at least at sport spec got about 5 to 6k max to spend as it will be a summer car.

whats the best engine to go for reliabilty wise power ? for my budget
 
None i would have a 3L V6 in a cab
sounds nice goes well :)
 
TOO many choices loads of 3.0 around are they reliable ?

The 3.0's are pretty solid yes, would probably be my preferred choice too unless you do lots of miles.
 
fight on!!!! of course im biased towards the 2.5 v6tdi. The engine is smooth with torque to spare but with the roof down may sound a bit diesely on tick over compared to the petrol but on the move dissapeares, fuel economy wise not much between them although i believe the 2.5 has the edge. Both available with 180 to 190hpand quattro. both suffer inherant engine issues, ie the 1.8 is prone to oil pump issues and coil packs although the diesel is prone to fuel pumps and cam shafts.what do you prefer petrol or diesel. They are both good engines and really there isnt a great deal between them.
 
The 2.5 TDi in the Cab is the 163bhp version and only fwd, as is the 3.0. I'm pretty sure the Cab wasn't available in a quattro till the B7 release. S4 aside.
 
Quattro was available in the B6 model cab from around the 2004 model year and only available in the 3.0 and 1.8T in both manual and auto

Nice one, I stand corrected. I was getting confused as the 3.0 is only available in fwd in the Cab.
 
140k though how much life have these 3.0 got
 
I bought a 2.4V6 cab in Dec last year, not a fan of turbos, 3.0 too thirsty maybe and silly insurance and a diesel cab noooooooo. Mine is a manual not an auto mind. Its not rapid but im loving it :)
 
Had my 3.0 petrol cab three weeks. Lovely. Words of advice from my own recent buying experience.
Check cambelts (Inc water pump, belts etc) has been done. It's a £1000 job. If multi tronic, transmission oil must be changed every 40k miles. Google for some horror stories and huge repair bills! (Choose Manual box to avoid this)
MPG mid 20's, drive like a nun and I get 30ish.
Amazing build quality, super smooth. Roll on the good weather :)
 
Following on from E4's post above, cam belt is a definite to check, beware of cheap cambelt replacement deals as they dont change the rollers, just the belt and the tensioner. Spot on with changing the water pump at the same time, they cost about 40 quid but when they fail (and they do !) its a head gasket job usually. I just paid £700 to get mine done at a main dealer.

Also check the roof obviously, some leak at the joint by the windscreen (mine does on the drivers but not the passenger side) every now and then but I think it needs tightening up.....

Personally I would avoid autos but thats just me, my last saloon was a tip-tronic and I didnt liek the way it hunted for gears, especally mid corner !

This is my first A4 cab but by 4th A4, love it !
 
Oh and check the rear screen isnt leaking, they can come away from the roof fabric along the bottom edge and its virtually impossible to stick it back.....
 
i will fly the flag for the 2.5 tdi, i bought mine 3 weeks ago and it makes me smile every time i get in it, you wont know its a diesel when driving it, only when stationary as has already been said. i wanted an auto, but avoided buying one after the horror stories i read while researching a bit. i have just walked in the door from doin a 400 mile trip to london and back, 42.5mpg, that wasnt hanging around either, 90 mph most of the way. if your looking at a b6, try and get an s line, i think the different suspension makes the car handle alot better than the standard suspension, you also get better wheels, but the tyres are quite expensive, i have priced up whats already on the car, and they are £230 a corner for bridgestone potenzas, probably find them cheaper with a more thorough search.

I have had a 2003 3.0 Cab for 18 months now and wouldn't swop it for anything. Great Car to drive under all circumstances.
I have the Tiptronic with the Gear Change buttons on the wheel and drive permanantly in this mode......very responsive and I have had no issues with the box.
Be warned they are High Maintenance. Mine has done 127K and there are monthly expenses to replace items that have got tired.

looking at a car with 70k on it 3.0 manual , seller is telling me cambelt is due at 80k is this correct car is a 2003 model.
 
Another vote for the 3.0V6 Petrol. I'm actually amazed by how economical it is considering it is also an auto and quattro. My typical commute is towards Farnborough. So down the chilterns, across a town, on the A41, join the M25, then M3 and through the town to towards the Aerodrome. Pretty mixed and my driving style is normally an indicated 80 where I can on the motorway. The OBC gives me, and my wallet seems to agree, about 34mpg which is not bad at all I think.

Definitely can recommend one, just make certain it has got all the toys you want as there are plenty about.
 
If you want to tune an engine then get the 1.8T, if you want MPG get the TDI and if you want a bargain then get the 3.0L.

Bear in mind the more options that are fitted the better the buy will be for you.
 
I have got a 1.8T sport and its great, I looked at a few tdi's but didnt wanna drive something that sounds like icecream van. And the 3 litre sounds nice but drinks like a fish and isnt very tuneable. The 2.4 is pointless and it just like a 3 litre.

i take it you only "looked" at a few TDI's??? on the move you wouldnt know its a TDI, stationary you would know its a TDI, but as i have the radio or a cd on, i dont hear any noise, and thats with the roof down.
