Major problem...
A4 TDI 2000 W reg.

Driving to work at 60mph and turbo went on me. car started to red line on it's own and smoke out the back. eventually when i found a bus stop to pull into i switched off the engine and removed the key... engine kept running for 5 mins until it cut off itself.
had a puddle of oil out the exhaust.
AA towed me to my mechanic who informed me the engine is finished.

is this the case? or does it need a new engine?

please advise

sounds like your piston rings have gone and it's been running on oil.
i would say its almost certainly dead.
probably due to warping the liners and the head assuming nothing snapped or hit anything else.

It can also happen if the turbo oil seals fail.

If this happens to anyone in the future, stick the car in fifth, lift the clutch and stand hard on the brakes. If you catch it quickly enough you'll be able to stop it, and the engine will hopefully survive.

Leaving it to stop by itself will almost certainly mean the engine is totalled.

So it looks like i'm stuffed then...
Would it be worth anything if sold as "spares or repairs" or if I stripped it and broke it down?

trying to get an idea of what to do with it now...

I recon spares or repairs it wouldnt be worth much at all. I paid £600 for my 1.8T quattro with a blown engine as a comparison, and i suspect they're a little more desirable too.

Breaking it yourself could see a reasonable return, items such as the headlights, rear lights and central locking pump are saught after, as is the centre console, especially if its double din. Some bits of the engine are probably salvageable and sellable, such as the MAF.

Breaking a car requires space and time though, and if you dont have these its not going to be particularly easy.

2 to 300 notes if you keep-it quiet and sell-it on ebay ! I might be interested if the car condition is good ... You have a contact number ? Regards, |Chris- 077 899 12128.

ideally i'd like to just sell it as a complete car.
Chris i'll let you know in a few days where we stand with the car mate.

No worries mate, just let me know a day or two before and i'll take-it off your hands...If its in good nick i might increase me offer ! Cheers !
