Been chewing over 2 cars but I'm swaying towards an 04 plate 1.8T 190 s-line avant. The only niggle is this will be my car for a good 5 years to come and its showing 85k on the clock, car is up for 7k with a good trade in already offered for my Bora. What these like wearing higher milage and what they like after 100k+. I'm smitten with the car and its spec but I don't want any risk with a potential long term purchase

Regards
Andy

I've had a 1.8 upto 220,000miles! Then I started to modify it lol!

As with anything, service history is vital, make sure the oil changes are regular and the cam belt / tensioner / water pump have been changed.

Mines on 96k at the mo with no problems, as above check service history and check for sludge, open the oil filler cap and look for black deposits.

Holy sh*t!! 220k! LOL. Must admit, the service history on the other car, the S3, was very comprehensive, and by Audi, but I didnt get a chance to see it on the avant. Salesmen just said it had FSH.

1.8t are spot on, my last one had 130k with no probs.

my current 190 t Quattro has 74k and is going well too. regular services and belt changes etc and will go forever.

I know of a TT 225 with 470,000 and giong strong. Been through a few clutches/turbos and countless number of MAFs though!

TBH in the case of service history, Full audi wouldn't impress me any more than a good specialist.

Na me neither, I use a local vag specialist called Swift, local to me. But I suspect the avant will just have local small garage history, from what I saw during the brief viewing it was Main dealer up to about 40k

Good good, I had people refuse to buy the A3 cause it has specialist services for the last 3, with the amount of threads about stupid things that Audi garages do, youd think people would see the light. Especially the ones about fitting brake pads the wrong way round!!!

BTW i love my a4 190 QSL its one of the nicest cars ive owned.

As with any 1.8T, regular oil changes are a must.

Our old A4 was baught with 150k on the clock and an engine that had clearly been neglected. I flushed it a few times and then gave it 5k oil changes and it made it to 195k before i removed it. The engine itself was fine, it just needed an oil pump and i got a good deal on a complete engine that had already had it changed, so i swapped the whole thing.

I'd much rather have a properly cared for 150k+ car, than one on 80k thats only had 4 oil changes in its entire life because its on AVS.

check for a reliable service history and regular oil changes (every 12 months / 12k preferred) and you should be good for at least 150k miles: probably one of the most robust petrol engines around!

I think the Audi adjusted the cambelt service interval on those engines to 75k/5yrs (I know they did for a 150PS A3 Sport that I had - which had done 11yrs without a cambelt change when I got it!!), but if it hasn't been done, it's overdue: your negotiation point should start at £475 (price to get it done by Audi).

Mine is a 2.5TDI, but has done 133k.... and looks tidier and less tired than most BMW's on HALF that mileage... and as one mechanic said "you're not even half-way if you keep it maintained - you've probably only just about got that engine properly run in by now"....

I'd be more nervous about a 75k car with patchy service history and oil-change intervals than a 150k car with perfect history... especially with a 1.9TDI or 1.8T.

Ok, so other than regular oil changes, and the cambelt, at 85k what other stuff should have been done, that I need to check when I go back to see it again

usual obvious stuff: make sure the engine hasn't been pre-warmed up, check for mayo in the oil, over-cleaned engine bay, overspray on the inside of the engine bay / boot, judder on the clutch / drivetrain, clutch slipping (top gear, 45mph and floor it), suspension knocking, that the car doesn't veer to one side on a flat surface, or when accellerating / braking...

Water pump and timing belt, also do the serpentine belts and a new thermostat, timing belt normally comes as a kit so make sure they do the tension springs as well.

1.8T's are pretty bullet proof, they suffer mostly from water problems, leaking hoses mainly, the one at the back of the engine is a pita to do if you have a quattro.

My Turbo just blew at 266,000 miles, kicking out loads of smoke but other than that i have had 3 cam belts and i chuck in any old oil i can find, even mixing mineral and synthetic haha, but as others have said... Servicing every 10k miles or 1 year will keep it up together, oil change is dead easy and a new filter costs peanuts.

Fuel pumps can fail, expect 250 quid from a dealer to do that, coil packs are known issues and mine needed a new starter motor at 150k miles, i never changed a clutch, exhaust, wheel bearings nothing even the brakes lasted me over 100k miles lol

Car still drives like new except for the turbo issue and is much nicer to drive than my new 2008 320d sport :)
