Tyres, too many to choose from :S

Ive just bought an 2.0 tdi sport, the car is great but im not impressed with the tires that have come with it, Both front tires are budget makes which ive never heard about before. They are really noisy on the motorway and constantly loose grip under acceleration, even at 50 mph with some hard acceleration the traction control light goes into overtime.

What tyres do you recomend?

Theres just to many to choose from, im looking for something really grippy, not so fussed about tyre wear but obviously dont want to replace them in 6 months.

Size is: 225/45 r17

Michelin Pilot, Continental or Goodyear F1's for me... have heard Avon ZZ3s are OK and cheap.
 
Pirelli P6000 are a good all round tyre, used them on my A3 for the last couple of years. Good wear, low road noise, you can pick them up for £100 each if you shop around.

Pirelli are a good tyre but generally a soft compound and don't last long in my experience, especially Pirelli PZero. Take a look on line at www.protyre.co.uk or www.blackcircles.co.uk
 
My goodness they are cheap but hardly a well known premium brand. Any reviews?

Not a premium brand, more mid-range, but are very well known.
There are plenty of reviews out there, both consumer and professional. Like any anything reviewed there are negative comments, but mostly they get spoken highly of.

Whenever I've asked guys in tyre shops to fit them and what they are like they reluctantly admit that they are good. I guess the margin on them isn't as good as on the premium brands.

I went for the falkens after my good year gsd3. In comparison the falkens are less grippy and make more noise. Although they seem to last longer than the goodyears.

Definitely agree with this bit. They are quite noisy, especially on older tarmac.
 
I have the Yokohama S306s on mine all round.
Not bad for 80 each fitted, coped with the snow well but not sure about the dry at the moment.
I suppose that they are classed as a premium brand

I was going to get the Yokos S306 but was warned off of them by a few people because of the very soft compound they use, meaning they wear very quickly.
Not sure how true that is though.
 
I have only had the Yokos 6 months however with 105 bhp its not enough to pull the skin off a rice pudding ! Couple this with the car only doing 5-6000 miles a year I am not too worried.
I have had Bridgestone Potenza, Pirelli P6000 and Michelin Pilot sport 2s all on the 140 bhp golf Mk5. Cant say I noticed any difference between any of them. all wore out in 12K approx

Given the choice I would just have just gone for the cheapest premium brand I could get. Vredestein supposed to be pretty good and always come out on top in the magazine tyre surveys
 
Interesting review on Falkens but worrying reports of noise and lack of grip. Quite frankly I will stick with the most competitiv of the mayor brands, currently ContiSport 3 seem to be the best value.
 
Another thing to keep your eye on is the 'Tyre Tread Wear' number - Linky This will give you an idea of how soft/hard the compound is and how long to expect from them (in controlled circumstances). My Goodyear Asymmetrics are a great tyre, but wear quickly (<9000k miles on the last set); however that is the trade off.

Aythree has already linked you to the site I always use when looking for tyre reviews, as it links magazine tests and user feedback; from a combinational of that you will be in a good position to make an informed decision. As for buying, I always use Camskill as the first place to look and then try and get price match from places that supply, fit and balance for ease. Just don't tell them it's an internet price if you can. ;)

Also for more recommendations, do a search as there are tens on tyre review threads in the 8P section
 
At the end of the day its the only contact patch you have on the road, so its always better to have decent ones. I normally stick to bridgestone, yokos or goodyears. I had falkens in the past, they grip well but nowhere near the grip you get with a good branded tyre. But at the end of the day only you can decide on budget and tyre choice.
 
i've run Goodyear F1's for past 4 yrs / 40k miles and had no issues with them however i have now gone to Conti contact sport 3's and finding them quieter and gripper than the F1's.

Useful post Robin... we had F1's on first 2 8P's and reckon the Contis (only experience with 225/18 and 255/19 are better and currently cheaper too in most sizes. I think the F1 Chevron Directional we had has recently changed but may be wrong on that one.
 
i have pilot sport 3's on my a3 and rate them very highly
anything made by pirelli seem to be mega noisy from my experience
two other makes for you to have a look at are Uniroyal rainsport 2's
and vredestein ultrac's both decent tyres and slightly cheaper than Michelin,bridgestone and conti's
 
I need 2x new front tyres. 225/45/R17

Currently got Goodyear Eagle Vector EV-2, and they were excellent in the snow, even with at least 10,000miles worn into them.

Though my alignment must be slightly out and the O/S/F inside shoulder is balding.

Winter isnt over yet, and its quite wet here in Aberdeenshire for most of the year and im looking for a tyre with similar tread pattern, unfortuneatly most if not all mentioned have very little latteral tread pattern (common in summer tyres) and have the long deep grooves around the centre, good for grip in summer!

I'm looking for a-symmetric patterned tread (eg. mytyres.co.uk - Details: Dunlop SP SPORT 01 A 225/45 R17 94W XL with rim protection, A )
I drive mostly on Broads and Singlecarriageways A Roads, so I'm thinking the A-Symmetric pattern would be better than any other.

This is just to deflect all the rain and possible snow that were still getting here, I don't want to be understeering down a ditch anytime soon! I could be speaking a loada sh!te, but this is just going by what I've read.

Few ideas in my budget:

We had the Michelin Pilots on our recent 8P Tdi Quattro S-Line on 18in 20 spoke rims... superb tyres and still all legal (just) at 23,000 miles.

I stick with Michelins and we have had them on most of our BMW's and Audi's. They seem to last the longest and I have to change them normally around the same 24k miles...

Our latest MY10 A3 has Bridgestones on it so will be interested to see how they fair.

Steer well clear of Pirelli P Zero. Awful tyre in my opinion and prone to puntures in the side walls :ermm:

Agree with you about PZeros . Very soft very grippy but don't last long... Not sure I fancy Bridgestones and hope ours come with Michelins again.
 
I think I'll go for the Primacys, I've found them for £104 ea, and I've got a contact that can fit the tyres for cheap if not free.

Might be able to get them cheaper too than £104 through Costco, but I'm still to check.

i put Cooper Zeon CS6s on the 17s on my 1.6 Sport and found them a very good tyre

got Toyo Proxes T1-Rs on my 2.0T and they're not bad either

thinking Falken FK 452 next tho, but considering the longevity of the Michelin PS3s maybe i'll give those a go instead
 
I put Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on my 18s when I couldn't find any F1s. A bit cheaper and just as grippy. Will have to see how the wear goes as only done a couplke of 1000 miles on them. Not too noisy either

Ha! Turns out they're not that expensive! The one I need is only £104.

They're a lesser speed rating (but I'm not going to be going anywhere near 149mph!) but AFAIK in our country we don't need tyres rated to exceed the car's top speed (like in Germany you do, due to the autobahns)

But they've got a higher load rating (94 as opposed to 91)

and best of all, they're coded AO which means they're Audi Approved. (something i didn't know till now)

So Im much happier at the prospect of getting to save a total of £104 (the cost of a whole other approved one!) from the £156 ones.

Theyre a good tyre aswell with very little noise and awesome grip! infact I think the O/S/F is near illegal and the other a little better and it still coped with the recent deep snow and still very icy roads!
 
Just to throw a spanner in the works with my recommendation!

Would you think again if you could getan extremely grippy tyre,at less than £150,which should see you good for 30000 miles? I'll type that again...THIRTY THOUSAND MILES!

That's what i'm running for the second time round.....just replaced my last set after 33000 miles and they still had 3mm of tread...about £115 a corner...

not sure whats been posted above but...... my take is get the best you can afford, i personally like Pirelli Rosso's and rate them as an all rounder, heard goodthings about Goodyear asymetrics but apparently they are gash in snow!! (depends how forward thinking you are)
 
i was keen on the Vector 2 because they were amazing all year.

im summer super grippy throughout the sunny season, and in winter, even with very worn tread they still ploughed through the deep stuff and i NEVER got stuck despite me being the only car to attempt going up tracks and even parking in it too.

highly reccommmended if you dont fancy splashing out on winter tyres and summer tyres. They are amazing in wet too, i dont think ive aquaplaned in them yet.

though the only thing i dont know is how long they last, i only got my A3 back in July 2010, and they were already on it, ive done about 13,000miles since then and they've only just dropped below 4mm.

They probably are softer than the likes of the Asymmetrics and the Conti Sport Contact 3s but for how good they are in the snow/wet/ice (which more is still set to come!) its a no brainer for me. (Quattro helps too, but shhhhh!)
