hey sounds like a bit of a stupid question but its because i have driven diesels for the last three years!!
At what revs is the engine happy working? eg is it ok be in 4th at 30mph!
where is the best power and at what point should i change gear before i lose the power? cheers
its a 210 version if that makes any difference

on the 4 motion side,if i get into trouble is it best to power out of situations?

Just listen to the engine mate it will always tell you how it likes to run. If you wanna relaxed drive keep the revs between 2-4 k. I'm sure you will get use to it in no time! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

All good advice, but a little more detail.

The engine comes in to play around the 3000rpm mark. But bear in mind that the turbo likes to spool up, so keep it ticking at 3000 before flooring it. This is also useful to know when changing gears, so that you don't come completely off the accelerator.

2nd gear is pretty useless on all but the tighest of rounadbouts. I tend to go steady and floor it on exit (usally in 3rd), you'll get a feel for the 4wd (quattro system - not 4motion VW rubbish - although technically they're same) trying to rain things in pretty quick.

You'll never reach 60 in 2nd so don't try.

4th is good to around 85.

5th goes to 110 ish

6?

Changing down to quickly will potentially harm any engine.

If you're after a quick dash, chage up sooner rather than later.

Clutch is about £220 including release bearing - Genuine Audi.
Labour is 8 hours -
Audi Specialist £280 + Vat + Clutch = £550
dealers - £790 job done !!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Flywheel if required +£500 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

And all that for a clutch thats not upto the job anyway. Get a specialist to fit it, and fit a uprated clutch and flywheel for the same price.

What would the signs be that the clutch is on it's way out?

3 times last week, I crunched the gearbox under quick accel, going into 2nd. Which it's never done before and I'm sure I had the clutch fully depressed. I've also noticed a slight burning smell when driving my hard, brakes/clutch or something else???

Pull handbrake on and try and drive away in first slowly, if the car dips then your clutch is most likely good.....as for the burning, if you've driven the car hard then it's probably your brakes...watching my greenstuffs smoke at traffic lights was always fun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Has anyone else found that at about 120mph the car seems to sit right down tight to the road, and feel wider, lower and rock solid, providing that confidence that you can just keep going. Is this the S3 aerodynamics kicking in ?? or would this happen at this speed due to the air flow irrespective of the car you're driving?

i did 130 down the runway with a 25mph crosswind and the car felt very very stable

Yes the car (TQ) feels very stable and safe at silly speeds (on the continent I hasten to add) but I really can't claim to have noticed any "squatting"!

Our Allroad squats but then it's supposed to!

That's just VAGs weak synchromesh's at their best!
You jusat can't rush a gearchange on a VAG 'box without fear of crunching a synchromesh...they are not great in design.

My S3 used to clunk going 2nd to 3rd if rushed...it did it from new.

My GTI Golf does the same...

Both times it appears they don't like being rushed accross the gate...in saying that, I've never noticed any notchiness or clunking going 1st-2nd or 3rd-4th etc...

Pretty much...yes.
Aerodynamics and front wheel toe angles...Audi's standard toe settings promote stability at speed at the expense of back road agility.

Not always...depends on how aerodynamic it is...and how thew suspension is set...as said above.

If you set the car up for the ultimate back road / track grip and performance, you will find the car wanders at speed...regardless of the cars aerodynamic performance, the steering still requires continual correction as the nose wanders.

For me, this is a small proice to pay for better real world grip, handling and feel...after all, how often do you really need 150MHP stability in the UK?

Thanks, Cee_Fore_Ess /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

And with handbrake on the car dipped, so guess it was the brakes, smokin.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Ta Gambba.
