S3 Fuel economy

I thought with being a TFSI engine the fuel economy would be better than 26 MPG but on a long run to birmingham i never got over that even though my cruise control was on. I know it was set a 80ish, i did not buy it for fuel economy but i somehow thought it would be better as i can get more than that out of my girlfriends A3 3.2 V6 on a shorter run !!!!!!!

I dont know if the 19 inch alloys will affect this or im getting to old and worrying about the price of petrol lol
 
I have done quite a few long runs, and on average getting 28/29, at constant speeds into 3 figures, but up and down all the time with traffic, I do have revo stage 1, I do think that adds a little more MPG, on shorter runs around where I live in the country, East Sussex cos of traffic I often get well over 30 mpg, on the whole I am quite pleased. Mine are 18's though
 
It all depends on how you drive it.....if you're constantly on and off the throttle and brakes,you'll end up with some awful figures,but if you are careful and anticipate what's in front,use the brakes and throttle less,then you can end up with some pretty good results.

I had an A3 3.2 which never got over 30mpg,and the unmapped stock S3 was about the same or slightly better.

Mapped,the torque is much better,so you can actually find it being more economical under the same conditions(if you don't use all the extra power!),and I found I could get up to 35mpg from a Stg2+ mapped car if the conditions were right.
Even now,with Stg3 and a GT3071 turbo,it will do over 30mpg on the same slow run into work,but as I've said,if you use the power,the economy goes.What you've found on your run at 80mph is that the stock car is well into the boost and is also a bit short on torque.
 
Did a 187miles trip on the motorway last night at sensible motorway speeds and the computer said i got 40.3mpg, i filled up before and after with Vpower and it used 23 litres. Even if i cane it on the motorway (friday night trying to get home) it still does 35mpg. It used to do less but things improved massively after i had a major service carried out on it.

Driving around London (so... brake, accelerate, brake, accelerate, brake, race from traffic lights so not to get forced into oncoming traffic because of lane merger, brake, speed bump, accelerate for two meters, speed bump, accelerate, red light, roundabout, zebra) I'm lucky to get 22mpg on V-Power.

Driving like a tachophobic granny... the best i've achieved is 25mpg.

Worse than a lot of you S3 boys. :think:

straight up london driving is a killer!! i only get about 22-25 as well round town, also not the most exciting drive about haha

You're not caning it, FACT.
 
Alright, caning it as much as you can on the M5, M6 on a Friday, i'm certainly not hanging about anyway. Thats a fact too.
 
If i'm lucky :laugh:, To be honest the M5 only gets bad towards Birmingham J3 onwards, the rest of it you can easily go a bit faster than your allowed.
 
I have recently bought a second home I'm Norfolk, about 170 miles away round M25 and up M11. Traveling at night, cruise set at 90 i get about 32mpg on my a3. I had expected a S3 to do better but it looks like i am going to be unlucky ?

I'd get my DIS fixed if I were you.
 
I think it probably depends how you drive, if your on a motorway at night and not in a rush and you don't need to brake or accelerate all the time, then your going to get good fuel economy. I don't think the DIS is faulty as 23 litres is 5 Gallons and 187 miles divided by 5 is near enough to 38 mpg, not that far off what it said.
 
you bought the wrong car if your worried about m.p.g ......

diesel maybe !!!!!!!!

You sure you aint just bought a 2.0TDi that someone's slapped an S3 badge on?????

Fairplay if you are getting that MPG, im only jealous!
 
Genuinely only average 19-24mpg per jouney and approx 20mpg per tank....DIS since new with 3.5k miles averages at 21.4mpg. Always driven sensibly until warm then mainly spirited, relatively short urban journeys.
 
Cheers elton, i thought there might be something wrong with mine. But if yours is simalar its probably ok
 
39/40 MPG knocking about and 50 MPG on a long haul !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its costing you S3 owners twice as much as me in fuel alone and mine aint settled in yet.

But we're having more than twice the fun !!

I'm struggling to get more than about 26, even when crusing at 75 on a motorway. Can't understand how some of you are getting over 30 ??

im only getting low 20,s in mine , anyone saying they are getting over 30 is telling porkies !!!!!!!!!

You do realise that they've got more than 4 gears, only joking. Mine used to have mpg in the high 20's, then after its last major service it improved. My journey to work is 185 motorway miles with 20 miles of A-roads at the end and i can get there and back on a tank and i usually drive around the 80mph mark. Car is standard and is run on Vpower, it has 42k on the clock. Perhaps i just drive like the old fart that i am.
 
Not something I really pay too much attention to generally, as I don't have to drive to work.

But when I drove to South France this summer, my trip average was 33mpg over a distance of about 1500 miles or so of 95% motorway long haul on cruise at 80mph. Around town, country roads etc on a general basis my average is currently 24mpg after 10k miles since new.

Things have improved a bit over the years......my Escort never got beyond 15mpg and could easily get into single figures.

For the same or more power,the S3 can do a lot better.
 
Stage 2+ S3 and i get around 25 mpg. Anyone getting twice the mpg in an a3 is not having a fraction of the fun.
 
I met a guy today with a 2009 S3 in Ibis White, just what I've wanted for a good few years now. We got chatting, and he said he was looking to swap it for a 2.0 TDI Sport like mine. He asked what economy mine does, so I let him know that my old 160-miles-a-day work commute use to see my doing 60-62mpg for the first 70 miles, dropping to 56-58mpg after the last 10 miles of fun twisty roads. I was regularly doing 625 mile tanks, and it has been over 700 on a few longer motorway hikes.

He then announced his 12-15mpg average and put me right off! That's what brought me to this thread, but you all seem to be doing far better than he was. My last properly fun car used to do 150 miles to a 9 gallon tank if I played, and it actually cleared the 300 mile mark on one sensible drive. This S3 owner gets 220 miles to the tank, and on a trip from down here (Somerset) to the Scottish border and back, he had to fill up FIVE times! I could JUST do the same trip on a single tank!
 
wow 12-15 mpg, he must be giving it some stick!!
i normally get around 270 out of a tank before the light comes on, and im not the slowest of drivers... i like to hear my CAI and DV chatter haha
 
Good to hear! Yes, I think he must launch from every junction, use 100% throttle to blip his downshifts and cruise at 120 on the motorway in fifth gear!

Think I'll go for a hybrid turbo, clutch, flywheel, remap, 19s, coilovers and new interior before I take the step to an S3. It'd probably stick with a stock S3 and still return 50mpg, plus cost a lot less :)
 
After getting caught speeding recently I thought I'd calm down for a bit until I at least found out how many points I'm getting.
Managed to get 410 miles from the tank with 50 miles still showing on DIS. Said an average of 38.2 on DIS but worked out at 37.9
when I worked it out manually after filling up. Averaged 42 on 2nd leg of the journey.
It was the most boring few days of my life but its out my system now and I can go back to "normal" driving now :racer:
 
Jeez, there is no way on this earth I could get over 400 miles from mine. If I drove out of a fuel station and sat at 56mph in 6th for 360 flat uncongested miles I think that would be it's best shout. I once got the trip to exceed 36mpg on a run for a split second before it crept back to about 34 on a gentle run.

If I drive sensibly the fuel needle moves off absolute full at 21 miles, if I hoon I can get it to move in 8/9.

I try and average 27-30 as it makes the car ownership proposition for 12k miles a year more stomachable.

I'm getting 28.3, according to DIS. Its a mixture of urban/dual carriageway.
I drive nippily, not mapped though, can mapping make it more economical??

I get 32mpg...thats what it does....running around or longer journeys. On sat i did a high speed night run from Cromer down to Surrey 185miles, cruise set on 90mph for M11 and M25 still did 32mpg...seems that all it knows :)
The old 3.2 used to do about the same on that journey but the S is much better running about and on the commute. what i really notice in the S is ..sit in traffic and the ave drops slowly, in the 3.2 it would plummet !.
 
After my stage 2+ i have to report fuel economy is better ! Going to work in traffic i get between 5 - 10 mpg better than i did. But if your having fun its slightly better.
