Hi Everyone,


Iv just brought a new bumper and im looking to spray my grill black including the rings, just wondered what sort of paint people have used on here, as im worries about stone chips ect..

and also since im fitting a new bumper, wether they sprayed the whole grille or just the rings and surround..

any help would be really apreciated..

I used Hammerites all in one SATIN BLACK spray (£10) - to be honest I got some stone chips the other day so I just sanded the area down and resprayed it again no worries!

Definately worth having a black grille for sure!
 
Hi guys, ok thats cool, what about matt clear laquer? u think that would stop little chips? im taking that the grille needs to be sprayed with a matt finish to mach the inner grill?
 
I done my grille and audi badge with Halfords gloss black paint. Sprayed on plenty of U-Pol laquer after and has been fine ever since. I'll try to get a couple pics up to show you.

im talking about the surroud and the badge, so basicly i want the whole grille blacked out, as for the the u-pol laquer, that sounds like a good idea.. thanks for that.

did u guys just spray over the chrome, or did u strip the chrome off first ? thanks
 
troopa, i was at the westside show, live just down the road, my a3 was on display.. better turn out this year, i think its starting to get a name now..
 
Sprayed my grille surround body-colour (Dolphin Grey) with Audi paint and clear laquer.
I sanded the chrome-effect down a bit first to give the paint something to cling to.

It has stone-chipped a bit so I wish i'd put another couple of coats on, but was trying to save enough of the can to spray a mirror-cap too!
 
nice! not good about the stone chips, thats what im worried about.. might get the spray shop to do the grille aswell, seen as though there spraying my bumper..

havnt got a clue what they would use..
 
I wouldn't worry to uch about chips as it's a really simple job to respray it - I did mine on a day I wasn't using the car and job done! I also bought another set of grilles for mine just incase I need the chrome look again one day!
 
ye thats what iv done chris, brought a new grille, so did u spray it on the car?
 
i used 6-8 coats of black plastikote undercoat, that lasted almost 12 months with only a couple of chips, so in the end i resprayed it then sprayed it with a rattle can laquer.... laquer from a rattle can tends to leave a satin finish which is what i wanted, shiny is a no go IMO
 
I sprayed mine with matt black paint from Halfords but neglected to lacquer it. After about 2 months it was riddled with stone chips so i removed it and started again but with a satin rattle can - again Halfords.
Have yet to get a stone chip but it's only been 3 weeks since I sprayed it. Does seem to be holding out better than the matt though
 
let the bodyshop paint it.

The paint from rattle cans is rubbish in comparison to proper 2K paint. The proper stuff will last much better.

bodyshops are great but the laquer is from a spray gun which will give it the natural glossy finish unless you shell out for matt laquer which is quite expensive IIRC

Spot on,our bonnets get chips and that has factory paint/lacquer so the grille will always chip unless wrapped.
 
proper 2k etc is much much much more resiliant to chipping than the crap that comes out of aerosol rattle cans.

Try spraying a bumper with rattle cans and see what a mess its in after only a year of driving, compared with how the original paint stands up to 10 years...

Been there, done that, etc etc.

Did a bumper on my brothers old vauxhall, and it was properly fubar after a year. Painted the chrome grille surround on the A4 and it was chipped to hell after only 6 months, and repainting it isnt easy, because unless you sand all the paint back off, which will take you about 5 years, you'll always be able to see the old chips thru the new paint.
