What would be a good "downgrade"?

I've been offered a job that although will give me a payrise, I would also quite like to move out nearer into the city possibly with my other half to make life easier for the both of us.

Currently I'm still living at home, but I don't know if I can keep up running & saving for repairs should anything go wrong with my A3. a 2.0TDi isn't really a city commuter car, but it is perfect for my commute now.

I'm not saying it is a definite, but if I were to "downgrade" to a smaller engined petrol for city driving, what would you reccommend that wouldn't cost more than £7k?

Corsa D?
Astra Mk5?
Fiat Bravo?
Ford Focus?
VW Golf?

It'll need to be cheap(er!) to repair should anything go wrong so hence the first being Vauxhalls and the last being the VW!

My thoughts;
Corsa - Not a bad motor, can't comment on repair costs as not seen many come through our workshops yet.
Astra - Cheap enough to repair and an abundance of secondhand spares. Watch for broken road springs.
Fiat - Stay well away. Fix It Again Tomorrow
Focus - Bits will come off it and all the engine oil will escape
Golf - No brainer choice out of all of them, but as you say, costs will be higher should anything go wrong, BUT, how often does that happen with a Golf?

For that kind of money you can buy a fairly new Pug mate.

307 or 308 with the 1.6 hdi engine is a flying machine or at least the one our lass drives is!!!
Good driving position and does most things very well and the big bonus is, plus 50mpg and 30 quid car tax!!!
and cheap parts and insurance.

Your choice mate but there a good deal if you just need to comute with it.

i would say get a corsa or maybe a clio d as they are both £30 per tax cheap to run and insure etc.. and do mega mpg but as said stay well away from a fiat my second choice would be a focus my mate has got a 1.6 zetec and its done 148k and its perfect nothing wrong with it at all
 
i'd buy a brand new Chevrolet Spark :) I think they are cool!
 
you get a good warranty that way i suppose if anything does go wrong so you wouldnt have to worry about cost of repairs

Don't do it, your car is fine. TDI's are troopers and keep on going, find a good independent specialist and you'll be fine. Big waste of time and ££ to downgrade

Sounds like what i've just done, although i've downgraded to raise some more capital for a house purchase

I've now got my hands on a Mondeo ST TDCi - it's a GREAT car, is everything that the Audi is and in some parts it's even better :)

Better MPG, lower servicing costs, few more toys too ;)

That would be my recommendation mate

Good driving position?! It's like driving a people carrier!!! And I think they drive terribly too personally.

my sisters boyfriend has got a mondeo ghia x 150 tdci he loves the mpg and the power of it , would be one to think about esp the st i think they are awesome lookin cars

Sorry Matt I was suggesting cars in a similar range to the ones he had listed, Focus ,Bravo and Astra. If its city driving he needs to do what better driving position than one that gives you a good view?

If he was after good car he would stick to the Audi, it sounds like a cheap newish car will do for he's needs at present until he gets his house sorted hence the recomendation, as I said for similar money to the rest he can buy newer with more toys.

Driving in city traffic jams dosent warrant the need for a quality hard core car, but if its full of toys it will give him something to play with whilst crawling along in traffic!

A Smart diesel would seem to be ideal for your needs? You could claim to drive a Merc as well!

Whilst the Mondeo is clearly the class leader in all respects, I believe they are slightly bigger than your current car so would be even less practical than what you have now !!
