Hi
Ever since iv owned my S3 its sounded like a diesel when i first start the engine!
I've heard it can be cured by removing the sump and leaning the oil pick up pipe... but that didn't cure it!
Its not a major problem but just curious really!
Oh and whens the cambelt due on a 2002 S3... i'm sure the service book says 115k but i'm thinking thats taking the p*ss!!
Cheers everyone!

i put 5/30 mobil one in it when i serviced it a few weeks ago, same time i dropped the sump etc
worth getting the cambelt done before its mapped in a week or so's time then?

I dont have iether of those probs , amk 2001 facelift , I read the vvt thread/s but deffo no noise from the cam chain also dont think i have the secondary air pump on the amk but sure does sound like a diesel start up , I know for a fact my cat heat shield is just sitting on top of the cat and think this is a possible cause so check yours mel man

in time ive owned mine its had new oil 10w40 mobil semi , oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, timing belt, coolant, thermostat, still sounds like a diesel at initial start up but only for a second or two

He hasnt got a secondary air pump Dave. Think they were only for pre facelift cars.

I would change your oil pump and pick-up and oil to 5w40 fully synthetic and if it still noisy on start up then, change the cam chain tensioner.

isnt the 115K in kilometers, thats about 70k miles and also 5 years so if it hasnt been changed its well overdue

I have this problem also and been told a lot of S3's n TT's do it. My mates TT also done it. 2002 BAM 77miles on the clock and have had a full rebuild service and still does it! Im not worried about it, makes the ur mate think twice wen he hears it start then its lovely warm idle n rev *Uhhhhhh Yeeeh*

I love my car!!

nice one cheers everyone!
im far from worried about it, always wondered whether it was just an ageing engine. I had to choose between 0/40 or 5/35 mobil one... otherwise i would have to actually pay for it lol
Cheers for the cambelt advice... its long overdue!!
Thanks people

Mines 97 and my partner who's a mechanic says it's 80,000 weather or not it applys to differnt years I don't know.

I think a certain amount of diesel like noise on start-up is a 'feature' of the 1.8T engine. Mine has done it ever since I bought the car when it had done 32k and continues to do it 50k later.

had my S3 cambelt done at 62k and it turns out the waterpump was about to self destruct. glad I had it all done now.

To be honest, for the minimal cost of getting the cambelt & waterpump changed, I would not risk going longer than every 60k or 3 years, whichever comes sooner. Had my waterpump sieze on my 1.3CVH fiesta back ine the 90s. Happened at ~80mph on the M1, and the results were not pretty. That was at ~60k IIRC. As a poor recent graduate, I did not have AA cover either... Cost me ~£1k all together in the end.

Better a few hundred pounds every few years than a probable £1000+ for a rebuild, should it fail. Especially on a reasonably highly tuned engine!!

Cheers,

i'd suggest 0w40 over 5w30, 30weight oil is a bit **** thin for a turbocharged engine, moreso if its tuned.

Personally, i'd be doing the cam belt every 40k or 4 years. Yes the manufacturer might well suggest that it can stay in there for 4million miles, but i'd rather fit an 80quid belt kit than be fishing bits of bent valves out of the cylinders.

I've decided to do the cambelt sat morn while im at work... see if i can get away with working on my car instead of paying customers :)
Whats included in the cambelt kit from audi? I heard theres a vibration damper or something that i need to get aswell?

Mine started doing that when i changed oil to 0w40, also changed pick up at the same time and cleaned sump. It didnt do it before at all. I just thought it was thinner oil?

Hi Lee is it an easy job to clean the sump and pick up is there a how too posted anywhere ?

My motor made a well wierd noise on start up, sourced it to the starter motor not disengaging itself correctly. Got a new one and swapped it out in 30 mins, job done
