hi i have a 1999 audi 80 1.8 cabriolet.

just this week i noticed my petrol needle not displaying the proper fuel in the tank on occasions. It would go down a quarter of a tank and rise up eventually again.

However last night the needle completely failed and dropped from a half a tank to empty working so when i completed my journey i switched off the car and lights, restarted the car and the needle on the petrol gauge worked again.

Also the brake system indictor light flashes sometimes when i start the vehicle for a few seconds. i have checked the brake fluid level and the braking on the vehicle is fine too.

Could this be a start of an electrical fault in the car?

i heard this can be a common probs on audi's any help to resolve this?

I had similar prob with my vw vento. The sender wire was grounding to lights everytime i turned them on and displayed zero fuel. There were other bits it kept doin too but I checked the wring and found the loom had corroded and the sender wires were touching the lights wires. Hope this helps.

it goes down side of your car in the loom for the rear lights etc (was under the floor sill panels on my vw on drivers side). They will be along with your fuel pump wires. its just two wires which go to a potentiometer in the fuel tank to sense how much fuel is in using a float. I doubt you will have same problem (corroded wires) on such newish car especially if its fullly dry inside on capret etc.

Hope this helps

I have a similar problem with the fuel gauge on my A4. It suddenly dropped to zero a couple of weeks ago and hasn't moved since! This seems to be a common problem on higher mileage cars (mine has done 133k) where a fault develops with the sender.
I have connected an ohm meter to the sender and it seems to have died. I found a possible solution on www.Audiworld.com. Look in the tech section under electronics. Hope this is of use.

thanks for that its got a whole article explaining how to fix it
