Hi Folks

Just wondering if anybody has found Shells new Fuelsave petrol to be the wonderfuel Shell seems to think it is?

From my point of view, driving a petrol 3.0 QS Cab, I'v noticed that there has been a reduction in performance using it, even compared to the 'old' Shell regular unleaded, which previously my car seemed to like.

I reckon Shell might be trying to increase the performance differential between the petrol for normal and performance cars and make performance car owners go for their V-Power instead, at a 9p premium (around here anyway) and fob-off normal car owners with the 'save a litre' line. Like we have a choice in the matter as it's completely replaced their old regular unleaded.

To save a litre in my car, the way I drive, my car would have to be forced to remove some performance, which seems to have been the case, in my experience anyway. After a couple of tanks of High Octane stuff again mine's back to its old self, but the disparity in performance between Shells regular and V- Power seems to have widened, ie V-Power may still be still the same but the new Fuelsave stuff seems lower. Same 95RON but with lower performance attributes.

The RON numbers are a bit misleading anyway as I'm told its how much Oxygen there is in the petrol that gives petrol it's 'punch', ie the more the better. I know Tesco do the 99RON stuff but I don't think it gives as good a punch as 97RON V- Power, and thats because Shell puts about 50% more oxygen into its petrol than Tesco.

Anybody else noticed an issue with Fuelsave?....and if you drive a 1.8 A4 and linger in the middle lane at 68.75mph all the time, then you probably haven't!

Discuss!

Not noticed a thing, but their quote is "save one litre per tank" so a total saving of £1.18 on 60 litres of fuel @ £70.80! You would have to be ****** scientific to see that sort of saving, marketing BS if you ask me. I should add I try and only run on shell fuel and use BP if I'm pushed, I've got a 2.0TDi and a 1.8T and found no difference in consumption or performance, just another way to get people using shell....

Yes ive noticed a big difference get a good few miles extra out of a fill up. I only use shell as I tried tesco and sainsburys and car seemed to lag. Went back to shell and I can really feel the difference.

I've filled up with Shell Fuelsave a few times now and whilst I haven't had any problems I can't say I've noticed any savings either, even on some longer runs. But as suggested above it would be virtually impossible to prove or disprove the claimed '1 litre per tank' saving in everyday driving conditions (hence presumably why the men in the white coats in the advert are using a rolling road rather than a test track or Friday night on the M25!).

I have read this thread, and the recent 'Supermarket Fuel' thread with some interest. I drive a 2.0 litre Sport (non FSI, non Turbo) so more of a cruiser than a performance engine. I always fill it up everytime I buy fuel and work out the actual MPG for that tankful, the average MPG to date and the average MPG to date by make of Fuel (yes, too much time on my hands!).

The results for just under 16,000 miles is an average to date of 31.9 mpg.

This comprises:
Miles
9,200 - Sainsburys @ 31.8
1,500 - BP @ 32.2
1,700 - Esso @ 31.6
3,500 - Shell @ 32.1 (at least 1,000 of this would be FuelSave)

I don't think the BP and Esso usage is enough to draw any meaningful conclusion, but I think the one conclusion that you can draw is that it doesn't make a blind bit of difference which make of petrol you use!!

Maybe a more powerful/tuned engine would see some benefits from 'better' fuel. Am I correct in thinking that my engine isn't able to benefit from the higher octane rating of Shell V Power or similar?

Similarly who knows whether the claimed 'additives' in some petrols have longer term benefits for the engine.

Personally I think there is a lot of psychology around the sale of petrol. Drivers want the best for their pride and joy, petrol companies promote a message that their fuel is something a bit special, and so you fill up with what you believe is the best and start to believe/want the benefits that were claimed?

I did fill up 5 times on shell. Still got 640 miles out of a tank. Exactly like Tesco's.

if you want it to last longer slow down lol

I took out an American Express credit card, 5% off purchases, hence a £70 petrol fill saves me £3.50. Bargain!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Simon,

You already drive a diesel:gaehn: if you go any slower you should get a moped :p

Jay[/QUOTE]

ha no one can admirer your car if your a blur hehehehe plus i like that i get cheaper road tax and with the low miles i do i only have to put 20 to 30 in every 2 weeks ;-) dont think you would get that from a moped lol

Thats right my car is just a blur and noone would see yours cos of the soot it chucks out lol

Jay

if you see soot you are not sitting behind me mate mine is clean

I know I'm an A3 guy here, but I feel a massive difference in such a way that my engine feels and sounds like a tractor or similar heavy plant!

I'm defineatly moving back to V-Power once I get paid! (money a little tight this month as I had my MOT and a throttle body going AWOL on me!)

Erm a 50cc moped would get you close to 100MPG maybe more. Also road tax for 50cc is 15 quid for 12 months.

I highly doubt any diesel car let alone a fuel thirsty audi one would do that.

P.s i used to love my moped when i was 16. tenner would last me the month of weekend fun.

ok you maybe right about that nutkin but to be fair if you was to put 2 kids your misses and shoping on a moped and be lucky enough
for it to move im sure that 100mpg would soon drop to the good old audis lol

lol its bond james bond haha :icon_thumright:

Disappointing to see how quickly a thread, started to draw some informed discussion about the merits and experiences of using different grades/makes of fuel, has descended into banter about diesels fumes, mopeds and Bond gadgets. Useful input guys, thanks.

There are 12 oil refineries in the uk, all your petrol comes from the refinery nearest you. I'm afraid tesco, asda sainburys do not make fuel.
I live in the north west and all fuel comes from the shell stanlow refinery. The fuel at the bp garages and esso garages all come from shell stanlow.
They may put there own additives in the tankers before the fuel goes in, but your shell v power is exactly the same as bp's ultimate. It comes from the same distillation unit on the refinery and is stored in the same tanks.
Any shell garages near a bp refinery or esso refinery will receive there fuel from them.
Don't be fooled by the marketing..

Thanks for getting us back on topic.

So the question is then whether there is any merit in the different additives?

id say there is i used to put redex in mine all the time and with shell it seems i dont need to as much

SIMPLE FACT IS now im back on topic shell fuel makes my car run better than tesco/morrison *****. As for economy i dont care about saving a quid 20 on a fill up.:noway: i arnt that tight

Someone's tired..............i find with audi's you've got to have a laugh or you get stressed with them someone will write a useful comment sooner or later lol

There's no need to be like that. If you can't have a laugh what can you do?

Surprised to get that reaction from you James as someone who consistently makes so many useful and helpful contributions to the forum.

My issue was that the original contributors to this post had gone to considerably effort to back up their comments with facts and links to sources of information re a product that we all have to buy for our cars. I was disappointed that the post quickly moved away from the topic which is most likely to reduce the chances of it getting back on target. I do have a sense of humour but there is a time and a place and felt it didn't show much courtesy to the original contributors.

This is a really good forum and a useful resource. One of the original contributors went to the effort of thanking me for my post and, as you have contributed so much useful information to the forum yourself, I am surprised that you didn't also support the point I was making?

ok look to be fair all post go of track at some point but it always gets back on to it so lets not make this some thing it dont need to be a joke is a joke and to be fair if it had been the first reply to the guys post i could see a point in some one saying some thing but as it was more than a few normal replys had been posted so no harm done:busted_cop:

Thank you for the comment firstly

I'm not sure what "that reaction" means - I was just offering my point of view in relation to your comment, in what I considered to be a polite and hopefully constructive way.

I contribute to a few other forums too, and in general they are all guilty of going off topic sometimes, which can both add and distract to the original post. Possibly here they had gone off topic and the banter wasn't adding to the thread, but in my personal opinion wasn't detracting from it either, and I'm sure in due course it would have returned to the topic.

It's a very good community on here, especially in the B6 section, where we all know each other quite well, so some off topic chatting is inevitable, and I think in general makes it a fun place to spend time, and also a good place to learn and come for help.

James/Simon

Thank you for your replies and your continuing contributions to a forum which I enjoy reading and occassionally contribute some (hopefully!) useful posts.

I agree that it's a good place to visit and appreciate that with so many friendships amongst forum members that some banter is no bad thing!

So in the spirit of the forum, and returning to the topic, I ask a question that was within my post. My car is 2.0 litre petrol Sport (non FSI). Does that engine have the capability to adjust itself to benefit from the higher octane rating of V Power or similar. I suspect it probably doesn't but I'm sure someone can offer a definite answer!

i think it dose mate most new cars adjust there timing when needed to a point any way so id say yep

Lucky you!! I get 525 max from my TDI Quattro around town. Not noticed a sniff of a difference from using Shell. Only sticking with it as the garage i use is always 1p cheaper than my local Tesco. Better to have 70p in my pocket than Mr Tesco.
