i was driving along today, went to over take a slow moving car, dropped down to 4th, push down the throttle, the revs flew round to 6K (i took my foot off before it hit the red line) but it didn't gain any speed what so ever.

turned off the road, no matter what gear i'm in, as soon as i go over about 2500rpm, the revs just flicks straight round to 6K and wouldn't gain much speed.

i was told it had a new clutch a few 000' miles ago but no paper work to prove this. its a 1.6 "sport", its now on 108K milage

would i be right thinking it needs a new clutch ?

thanks for any help Jay

Definatley sounds like a clutch slip, the clutch might be ok, but your crank seal or gearbox could be leaking onto the clutch, have a look at the clutch housing, if theres oil, its one of the seals

cheers guys, ill have to take a look when its light again

update

opened my bonnet today, stunk of gearbox oil. looking under the car, the under side of the box is covered in oil. i think its leaking from the gasket but not 100% sure as i can't see where its coming from.

whats a common fault with the box ? is there a common gasket that goes ?

thanks Jay

to dark to get a pic now, i'm gunna try and driver it to work tomorrow so i can get it up on the ramps.

my boss, son works for Audi so thats a win, but don;t wonna get ripped off by him saying a need a big list of parts replacing

alright sound mate. i know some young guy tht works for audi, thinks he knows everything but hes an idiot haha. just post up a couple of pictures and i'll have a look.

The box on these has a fault that causes rivets to brake and destroy the box from inside out with the culmination being when the parts ecape the casing around the bellhousing area.

£450 for a rebuilt box plus £90 for a replacement clutch due to oil contamination.

The prob with used boxes is you are likely to have the same problem later on, unless you are lucky to find an already updated one and/or one with the green cap on the end of the box as this indicates the later revised box IIRC

jesus i didn't think it would cost that much, if it does come back at that sort of price, i will just scrap it.

mine has a green oil filler cap if thats what you mean ?

No, the green cap is on the end of the box, visable from under the wheel arch.

Lets see what your guy says, you might be lucky

no mine hasn't got anyother green on it apart from the oil filler cap

i will update tomorrow once i have found out what is wrong with it.

Ah actually thinkin bk about 2 months, my mate had a 1.6 for sale with a guff gear box, this could posibally be the same thing, he said it was struggling to go into gear and then just completely failed leaving half a gearbox on a b-road and him in a bush, bad news if u ask me, take the engine and box out and sell. then buy a 1.8t engine and drop that in it :)

Robbo

the gear box is ******.

i been out and bought a 1.8 20V turbo A3 today :)

gearbox input seal could be gone...thus the oil getting into bell housing and causing clutch to slip like mad

ok thanks mate. i sold the car on ebay

should be going today hopefully
