3.0 sounds strained?

Hi,

As some of you may have read on here, I'm currently looking after a mates 3.0 Sport for a few months.

Now my own car is a E39 540i :sly: and when driving the A4 I just find the engine sounds strained at high revs. Below 3000rpm ish the car sounds decent from the exhaust, Nice and V6ish but at high revs/full throttle the engine sounds really metalic and like its trying to tell you to back off!

Is this what they all sound like? My BMW (admitiedly a V8) sounds fine at high revs and insipires you to push on!

I imagine it's just the different characteristics of the two engines. Some are designed to soar and do their best work at very high revs, others not so much. Audi's V6s are smooth & powerful, but not ultra-high revvers.

It does pull well low down and drive in 6th nicley from whatever speed really.

I know about peak power etc, would just expect a V6 to pull to the rev limit a bit nicer. I dont remember my old ST24 being like this.

Curiously, according to a quick bit of googling I've just done, The Audi 3.0 peaks at 6,300rpm (220bhp), whereas your BMW V8 (a 4.4 litre, yes?) deliver its 282 bhp at 5,700rpm.

Go figure!
 
He's saying that your car develops it's peak power at lower revs than the A4 does.
 
Yea I know, But it pulls fine all the way there.

I'll await a reply from someone with a 3.0 and see what they think thiers sounds like.
 
I know when my car makes peak power lol, I was just wondering what he meant by his comparison. :)
 
i have a 96 bmw 735i (same engine, different blocks) and a4 3.0 quattro and i've noticed the same. i drove 4 different 3.0's before i bought mine and i noticed the same thing in all them. i don't think its a problem, just different engine charactoristics.
 
Fair enough and a good comparison. Just doesnt sound very inspiring!
 
I've owned a 3.0 Quattro sport, but it was totally the opposite to what your saying.
Mine seemed rather sluggish at low revs but when got to around 4-4500rpm it took off!
It really did liked to be revved all the way to the limiter with ease!

It was really quite noticable and I'm suprised no one else has commented about it or had similar experiences.
 
Agree with Paulsb, i've got a 3.0 quat and pulls and sounds nice low down but higher up doesn't really sounds good or pull well.
 
Hmm, I was wondering if it was a poor service history, bad oil or something. Its done 78k or something and has just been serviced but has been the same since he's had it.

Cant see how there can be such different arguments!
 
Maybe mine had the Honda engine lol!

Defo was more power higher up the rev range tho, maybe previous owner had it remapped/chipped? :eyebrows:
 
My 3.0 Quattro cab is also a bit strained, or metallic sounding at the higher revs, but getting it upto 125mph it then settles down and flies as all the VTec type valves and cams open up and its released! I can see why its a 155 mph car now. Only down side is that you habe to get upto these speeds to feel it!

I was expressing an element of surprise that the BMW engine has a lower peak power engine speed than the Audi, when your description of the two engines' characteristics (i.e. that the BMW pulls much more strongly at the top of the rev range) might have suggested it was the other way around. I'm sorry if I confused you; it wasn't my intention.
 
No problem, what I meant was regardless of where the engines make peak power - the bmw seems more comfortable pulling to it!
