The suggested fix seems to be to fit a new slip ring. I don't think I would attempt this personally because it involves removing the steering wheel (and therefore the airbag) and I would be worried about it igniting. I would get a garage to do it, but I guess there are more daring folks on here...

It seems to be the slip ring that causes the squeak - not any kind of bearing. You will need a new slip ring in all likelihood. Cheers! MF.

If it disintegrates while you are driving, pieces can fly off and puncture the bellhousing and/or the gearbox casing. I probably wouldn't risk it unless you have to. MF.
