Had the same symptoms on mine,changed the thermostat and gave the cooling system a good flush out and now the water sits at 90 degrees.Not too difficult to do either.
I think the charcoal canister is indeed under the drivers side wing, and the fumes are allowed into the inlet manifold under certain conditions determined by the ECU,which opens a valve.
I think the engine needs to be at operating temp and not idling,but it was a while ago I read it!

The wiring kit I bought says to connect to the input side of the module which controls the bulb failure check system.Do you know where this is,or even if it is necessary?

I had a fuel leak recently coming from a pipe which exits from behind the drivers side wheel, level with the sill.I think this is connected with the emissions/charcoal canister but I didn't investigate it fully and it's not leaked since. May be worth a look.
I have a similar problem with the fuel gauge on my A4. It suddenly dropped to zero a couple of weeks ago and hasn't moved since! This seems to be a common problem on higher mileage cars (mine has done 133k) where a fault develops with the sender.

Apparently Halfords belts are reinforced compared to other belts on the market,as they are aimed at (possibly) more ham fisted home mechanics!I'm going to change my belt next year and will probably just use an Audi one though.
