Went to the local mechanic today and did the computer check: 4th gear solenoid has problems and the mechanic suggested gear box replacement!! Can't I just replace the solenoid??? It's going to cost lots of $$$$ :-(

This cars giving me all sorts of problems..!!! Just bought a new switch unit on ebay as a result. Mines done just over 80k now and probably due for a timing belt soon. Looking forward to your rpm readings.. Cheers, Steve

Thanks for that Clach, Yeah it's a non-tiptronic standard gearbox.. and yes, I too think it's crap.. I'll be taking it to the local garage tommorow to see what the problem is. Just went out for a quick drive to recheck and now I can't switch the ****** foglamp off.. My wife is going to be ******...

Hi all, After selling my 1.8T last year, I've somehow ended up with another A3.. But this time it's 1.8 without the T and it's auto :-( Anyway I have noticed that the rpm stays at about 4000 at 100km/h on motorways. To me this seems a bit high (my 1.8T used to be about 3200 at 100km/h)...

OK I almost fell for it there. I did some further search on ebay and some chips claim to increase 40HP! If only it was that easy.....

How about a new cold air intake and air filter?? that would be the first thing I reckon.

The hid set suggested by rodenal is pretty good and cheap. Very easy to install also! I would go for 6000k instead of 8000k tho..8000k is a bit too blue.

I'm 22 with 1.8T and it costs me just £200 a year for full cover!! I live in NZ tho :p insurance costs over there sounds insanely expensive!!

Hi, I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket podfilter for my 1.8t. I've had some good results with K&N filters with Japanese cars in the past but not sure how they will go with the a3... How much improvement to the response should I expect?? Is it worth doing it all?? Would appreciate a comment...

A3_turbo's silver car looks really nice with those black ones..but remember his lights are the aftermarket black lights for the facelift model. They looked quite different (and better) than the common prefacelift black angel eyes sold on ebay. I have the same car as bouncer--daz and still cant...

oh really??I guess UK a3's have different spec to the ones here in New Zealand..I havent seen any prefacelift with chrome surround and white back light here. We get a lot of use japanese imports here too so that must be why then..

the gearstick surround is chrome I think..and the speedo and rev meter have white backlight not red as in pre facelift.
