Hya fella, I had what sounds like the same issue on my 2001 A6 Avant - turned out it was the wiper linkage. I had mine replaced at the dealers, but it may be with a bit of tlc yours could be repaired.

If you haven't found it yet, try under the rear seat base, central between the two doors, screwed to the floor. I bought one through ebay from dacar_eu - a polish outfit. They don't seem to list anything on ebay anymore, but have a website www.dacar.pl which is in English. Good Luck!
