I have the Continental ContiWinterContact TS 830s on 16" rims and am very happy with them. I don't have any other winter tyres to compare them against, though.
According to the UK distributor, Brembo Sport pads are made for them by Ferodo based on the DS2500 compound; some of the pads in the Brembo range have the wear sensors. However, the Brembo Sports are R90 and the Ferodo DS2500 are not, so I'm not sure how that works. Might be woth a look, though.
I haven't driven with the Pirellis, but can see that the tread pattern is very different to the Goodyears so would agree that you're better off sticking with the same ones as the rears.
I have the Eagle F1 GS-D3; fantastic grip in the wet or dry. The wear rate seems ok, and the rears have worn about half as much as the fronts.
However, when it snows you'll be better off on foot; they're terrible. The slightest incline will defeat them.
It's definitely a water spray problem; I think the pads get wet and the water (or possibly steam) stops them gripping on the disks. It only happens in wet conditions. I hope that better quality components will help - any recommendations for good pads/discs & suppliers? Discs that don't rust so...
