Mine was like that too.. It was better after services and once had the linkages tweeked by an Audi Dealer technician but kept coming back. Then my fuel pump started making a nasty whiring noise, so was replaced and weirdly enough the gear box is as smooth as silk now (touch wood). Weird eh ! :)

I used to find it was less crunchy after a servive too... Have had the linkages tweaked by Audi before which solved it for a couple of months...
I've had this for 2 years... Then recently my fuel pump started to die (made a weird recyprical rubbing sound at the rear underside of the car) and has been replaced. As a pleasant side effect **drum roll** the crunch from 2nd to 3rd has completely gone ! I guess the fuel supply was backing...
I should probably add that after the RR session with only one fan my car went into limp mode (the turbo was turned off completely by the ECU) and Fontain (who I took it to afterwards to get it checked as they had mapped it with Revo) reported that all the map settings were all wrong afterwards...

You should be able to replace the motors without removing the bumper (AFAIK). I had one changed by Reading Audi and one changed by Fontain (failed a few weeks after the 1st one was fixed).
If it's only one side dropping it's almost certainly the motor, there's loads of posts on here about it...
