Does having a manual or S-Tronic gearbox make much of a difference to economy?

So I was reading the above article and was quite surprised when the author stated he averaged 34.5mpg over a 2500 mile period. What have owners on here been getting over a period of time of mixed driving? If we get 34mpg out of ours, I'm going to be a little dissapointed!!
