Hey everyone.

I've been reading endlessly trying to get info on what exactly i would need to install a GT28R kit onto an A3 1.8T. I havent bought the car yet but looking to get one pretty soon.

Is it a simple swap from the K03 turbo? as i've seen this kit on ebay and a few other places suggesting that it is as simple as that.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/E2-GT28R-20V-...vr_id=&cguid=d8e4ddf81280a0aad3b56fc5ffafcd0c

Basically i want to achieve around 300bhp from a 150 A3 1.8T. What else would i need. i know i'd need a remap as well.

Thanks for all your help!

You would need (at least) S3 injectors (maybe 440's), S3 MAF, new TIP of some description and a stage 3 MAP... to get the best out of it you would also need a 3" downpipe, 200 cell CAT, exhaust and FMIC...

TBH, a cheaper and more drivable way to achieve similar power would be to go hybrid K03... GT28rs would be a lot laggier than a hybrid K03 and can achieve nearly the same power with the right bits fitted...

Its advisable to fit rods too if you plan to go much above 300ftlbs of torque..

Thanks for all the info.

I was under the impression though that you wont get anywhere near 300bhp with a hybrid ko3 turbo? more like 240-250bhp?

ok i've just seen that you can get upto 300bhp with a hybrid although the kit will cost around £1400 which is around the same as the GT28R.

I'm assuming that i wont need half as many mods to fit a K03s turbo than i would a GT28R. is that right?

Blimey.... where did you get £1400 from? A hybrid K03 will cost you around £600 from CR Turbos which is less the half the price of the GT28rs kit you linked too... you would still need all the stuff previously mentioned though regardless of which turbo you went for...

Get the hybrid and use the money to get rods... or just go proper big turbo... :)

Well what is a hybird k03?

A K03 with K04 compressor and turbine... essentially makes it a K04 that fits straight onto the existing K03 hardware... obviously you need the injectors, S3 MAF housing and a few other bits but its the easiest way to get S3 power from an A3 (or any other K03 turbo'd VAG car for that matter)

One Ibiza I know of with a K03 hybrid fitted has a dyno plot showing 298bhp...

anyone interested in a K04 023, manifold, downpipe, custome alum tip, oil&water lines for a conversion let me know I can get the whole kit for a very good price.

So am I right in thinking that if a K03 Hybrid, which is essentially just a standard K04, can make 296 HP and 344 ftlb (albeit with water/methanol injection and uprated rods), then the K04 hybrid should make even better figures than this? (obviously coupled with the right mods and exhaust manifold etc.)

That's what I am thinking too.....

Because I read on here that a K04 hybrid can barely make 300BHP...:haudrauf:

Needs clearing up

couple of things,.. k03/4 hybrid uses rs6 k04 turbine wheel and housing is ported.. so not a direct comparison with k04-023
also, k03 exhaust manifold flows better than k04 one does in std form.. and the example car with 296bhp was on a hi-flow k03 manifold plus water meth injection running 8.25 degrees more advance, which is potential 10-15bhp contribution

in case you get your hopes up of a k04 getting 300bhp... which I just dont see being possible on realistic rollers.

K03/4 hybrids flow 220-227g/s in my experience of mapping and installing them... stage 2 k04's with all the mods are in the range of 200-215g/s

The k03/4 hybrid named above also runs 26psi peak boost dropping to 22psi at 6000rpm, which most k04's wont sustain.

Cheers Bill. So are you saying the K03 Hybrid and K04 Hybrid are the same turbo, just in a different shell, one to fit the oem A3 manifold, and the other the S3 manifold? So both will give the same results when all mapped in with identical mods? (Not taking K04 manifold restriction into account).

Providing rods are done, what sort of torque figures should the K03/K04 Hybrid get?

Sorry to the OP for hijacking this slightly, but this info will probably be relevant to you aswell.;)

no thats not what i have said..
k03/4 hybrid is higher spec than the k04-023 is what i ahve said..
k04 hybrid is larger again, using the billet k06 compressor wheel also, as well as the largest, and clipped rs6 k04 turbine.. so no, k04 hybrid is larger again than the k03/4 one

in ascending order of flow/power potential

k03, k03s, k04-001, k04-023/2, k03/4hybrid, k04hybrid

hope this explains

As for torque, on an ibiza running a k04 hybrid, we saw 250+g/s airflow, and on the dyno it saw 360lbft torque.. now that engine had rods, is 1900cc, and ran 1.8bar peak boost and 1.5bar sustained past 6krpm

we will see what speedysteves s3 does when i get to map it on its hybrid k04

Ok, apologies. I assumed when you said K03/4 Hybrid you was talking about both K03 and K04 hybrids, when in fact that is the name for just the K03 hybrid which has the RS6 K04 turbine. Happy days. Yes, will be interesting to see what Speedy Steves produces as I'll be thinking about this line of tuning early next year possibly. I'm liking those torque figures
