Just wondered if anyone agrees with this ,once you get your alloys refurbed when you clip them they look worse. The paint seems to peel off as well.I had mine done at the MD dealers so i presume it was a good job.
When the alloys,18" 8 spoke in my case are new are they painted or polished oe enameled be cause when you clip them from new the damage never looks as bad as when painted.
I was thinking of getting them done dark grey but i then thought how bad they will look if clipped, loverly silver showing.

I never noticed any difference it must depend on who has fixed them,a dealer doing them does not mean a good job, maybe a dearer price.

i agree... i have refurbed alloys before now.. Never think they look the same afterwards... especially when the mrs curbs one of them within 30 seconds of my fitting them...

would it be down to if the wheels have been wet sprayed or powder coated?

Most wheel refurb companies use spray paint and if your lucky a clear lacquer on top. This is no where near as resilient as the baked on finish you get when the wheels are OEM. The best bet is to have them refurbed using powder coat. This is harder than original finish and lasts and lasts.....

I had the swing arm and suspension links done on my bike 3 years ago, they still clean up like new despite the worst conditions and the passage of the chain.

I had all four wheels done shortly after I bought my car as they were all badly marked. Have to say that I was amazed by the results and whilst I'd seen quite a few 'before & after' pictures on the websites of wheel refurbishment companies nothing quite beats seeing the effect on your own car.

The work was done by someone who has a contract with the local Audi dealer (one of their staff kindly gave me the contact details to save me the cost of going through the dealer themselves). It cost me £150 'cash' to have all four wheels done. If you wanted to be hyper-critical you can find a couple of places where they are not perfect but you'd have to look quite closely and at that price it was a huge saving over the cost of new wheels and it made a dramatic improvement. On the wheel that had been in the worst condition you literally couldn't see where the original damage had been.

Much to my frustation I managed to mark one of them about a month after the work was done but this minor damage to the refurbished wheel didn't look any different to the damage done to the original factory finish.

Maybe I was just lucky in having a good person doing the work but I wouldn't hesitate to have them done again if required.

welllllllllllll i refurb wheels for a living and can say iv not had any one come back apart from when they hit the curb again.
it dont mater if they are new wheels or old if you hit a curb its going to mark them as alloy is very soft.
i use paint then clear lacquer on every wheel some are painted some are polished.

You should not have told everyone that! We will all want you to refurb our wheels FOR FREE, haha!

I am after some of the 17" sport wheels, and will hopefully be spraying them a bit darker as i'm not too keen on silver. So i'd expect scrapes to stand out more as you said, but oh well.

ha you can all try lol iv just gone to 17 sport ones my self love them.
if you do go darker just use a dark primer mate that way it dont stand out to much plus keep some of the paint
for tuch ups

Cheers! I am just trying to find a decent pair for cheapo, cos i'm a tightwad mainly. I would like to go bigger, but they just get too expensive, and on standard SE suspension they just won't look right any bigger I don't think.

i did not want to go much past 17'' really and it looks good 235/45/17 ofset45

It must be the powder coat for sure. From new you scuff the whell and you see the gouge BUT once they have been refurbed you get the gouge and the paint coat coming of in that area which spreads after a while of washing(jet wash ) in my case.
I think i will find out about powder coating next time.
Mine wre done at a MD ,the van i have seen at many dealers. Only the face`s of wheels were done and the tryes left on. £90 +vat.
Looked great at first.Just look worse when clipped.

wow im not charging enough 90 you say.
i can say iv done many with bad curbing and no come backs at all
but i do mine by hand and start from scrach ie undercoat the hole wheel then the colour then clear coat and in doing this
all the marks are gone completly as if they was not there. maybe you just got onlucky mate.

painted mate most alloys are painted and some are just polished alloy but i dont do that as the clear lacquer comes off very easy
as it has a hard job sticking to the smothnes of the alloy. its more bikes wheels that are Powdercoated i think.

bit of both really the ones above where mostly done with my DA but some i have to do just by hand as you cant get the DA on them still come out the same justa pain in the *** for me ;-)

simon i work in a car bodyshop and i am allways refurbing wheels,in the paint mixing computer i can find out the exact colour of the wheel from factory and mix paint req! ive never had any comebacks yet and i do the same as you but i bake them in the oven!! any colour you want realy, easy to make them look mint, i will be doing my r6 ones very soon! dont forget guys if you see a nice colour it can go onto your alloy and if your that bothered about the previous colour showing from a ding then get then bead blasted first!!

hi jimmy yeah some times it is hard to match colour if you do just one and to be far i dont think you can ever get a 100% match can you but i think every one knows that really qjames wanted the colour on the r6 ones i think its like a gunmet gray if you can let me no that one it would be good mate
