Just been on the phone to ExhaustsUk in Sheffield.

I asked about a turboback system with a 3" downpipe. I got told that 3" is overkill and recommended a 2.5" instead. Don't 1.8t's A3's have 2.5" DP's as standard anyway?

I was looking at this, as recommended by Prawn, but unsure if its going to be a straight forward fit.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-GTi-B...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5887812c4e

Anyway I was quoted £550 for a full turboback (decat)
£350 for a catback
3" decatted downpipe - £190

What do you guys think? am i better off going for the ebay downpipe and getting a miltek catback or is the quote I got from exhaustsuk reasonable?

Any other options I should look into ?

cheers

nope i think the original downpipe is 2.25" IIRC...we have just fitted a 2.5" miltek downpipe and sports cat from Prawn no less, that has had to be reduced to mate upto the standard exhaust....

i think 3" is indeed overkill, im following prawn in fitting a tdi centre section and standard rear box..... as the restriction is hardly a problem on these cars

where in sheff are ya?

Sheffield no more unfortunately, back in Hudds

Is £550 a reasonable price for a decatted turboback?

Exhaust uk are normaly quite good, id say £550 is abit high for them, did you go into see them or phone them?

That was a quote over the phone

Them downpipes are for S3's, I have an A3 so not sure they'll fit.

Is the 3" DP only recommended for the S3's and not the A3's?

cant win em all fella :)

yeah i agree, that does seem expensive...i was going to go there too once we have an S3 rear bumper

I take it you're talking about Millwall....ah well

Don't want the discreet pipes or the pipes hangin below the bumper....was thinking of cutting into the bumper to make space for the pipes or would that look silly?

dunno fella, depends how good the cut is i suppose, thats a reason we were gonna go for stealth or an S3 bumper and get an exhaust made to fit......

get some pics up though as soon as ya sorted...... you'll prob get there before us ;)

Will do, but holiday first

yeah feelin that mate...... when ya off? thats our plan, get the main hol out of the way (in 4 weeks :( )then spend any surplus on the cars :)

That is a fair price to me. I got quoted £600 for a 3" turbo back running a de cat from a very respectable exhaust fabricator in Cardiff.

The price of stainless steel has gone up recently I think.

3" is perfectly fine, wont be to loud as long as you run some silencers. Alot of people run 3" system.

yes but theres no need to run a 3" system on the A3 is what he's been told - which there isnt, the standard 2.25" is plenty so why pay the extra for 3" is beyond me

there was a post saying the other day that with golf exhausts u need to cut away a bit of the bodywork behind the rear bumper and then make a bumper cut out too to fit the a3. Cant remember who posted it

you odn't need a 3'' system. 2.5 is fine, the standard is 2.25, this is also fine.

However, the cheapest downpipe is the 3'' DP/decat, which reduces down to 2.5'', then 2.25 to amte to the standard system.

if you want a custom cat back, the best thing to do is get the downpipe and decat I suggested, it's perfect, then have them fit that do a cat back from there.

there's nout wrong with running a 3'' DP on an A3, is a 3'' system that you'd never need.

As Timmy said though, a wicked cheap solution to a good flowing quiet exhaust is a Downpipe of some sort (I'm going to fit a 3'' DP/decat as my ost cat o2 sensor already mapped out) and a tdi centre section, same shape and bore as standard but without the centre box

Simples.

oh, and yes, mk4 exhausts do fit if you trim the bumper, aside from the very end of the tail pipes, they're identical.

Really, you need to choose if you're happy running a decat or not....
