Hi guys new to this forum just wondering what you would have out of the new Audi A3's and why...

I need a diesel as i drive around 500 miles a week :| but economy between the two doesnt really mater.

I'll probably get the quattro model of either as hopefully will be a bit more fun than my current FWD, and ill look into chipping it for more power regardless of what engine as ive heard PD's are something else lol. Any way thanks for reading

I'd go for the 170 after all the turbo problems I had with a 140! But that was a 2005 but have heard some later ones had issues too!

170 with quattro...very nice!

This week i am driving a 140 A4 Auto and simply amazed at how well it goes....+£120 road tax + 48mpg...and its a ****** great slug of a thing !!

DSG is the only thing that still works on mine...LOL ;)

170 in quattro format then map it - why? because its quicker! :racer:

TDI-140 all the way! Why? Free road tax and 50+MPG even when driven like a nutter.

Depends on how you drive and weather you intend to mess about with it or not. The PD170 mpg isn`t that much better then the new petrol engine plus it has a DPF. If you like to drive hard and you get a PD170 get the DPF removed and remapped plus fit an exhaust for about 220bhp and no DPF issues any more. Shark performance do a very good package for this. If you don`t tend to mess about with the car and want good mpg and a good reliable car ( apart from turbo issues which isn`t Audi`s fault ) that doesn`t tell you how to drive it because it doesn`t have a DPF fitted then get a PD140.

Not the quickest when the DPF goes into regen and you have to drive at 40 mph before it finish`s cleaning itself or i have known several remapped PD170`s DPF get blocked after 20,000 + miles and need a new DPF at £1500 + fitted.

Sorry my bad should have read the op`s question proerly as i didn`t notice he stated "new" Audi range. You used to be able to get a PD140,PD170,common rail140 and common rail170. The PD170,common rail 140,170 all come with a DMF fitted.

i have the 170 quattro remapped, amazing.

I have a TDI-140 common rail that has been remapped to around 170-180. I test drove both the CR140 and CR170, both with DSG and found the 140 slightly better and smoother. My current A3 is my third diesel A3 and all have had the DSG and I have not had any trouble with any of them. Having driven an A3 with the DSG there is no way I would ever go back to a manual. I use the tiptronic mode nearly all the time and find it real fun to drive. MPG is around 48 even when driven quite hard.

I've only driven the CR143 and CR170 engines in new A4 Avants but still a fair comparison as it was the same model of car. The 170 was a Quattro too and it was still significantly faster than the 140 non Quattro. I was really disappointed with the lack of go from the 143 to be honest. Felt lifeless. The 170 feels the much sportier, responsive engine. The 143 goes much better in the A3 though but then the 170 goes that much better again in an A3 :w00t:

Also remember any remap you can do to the 143 you can do to the 170...
