Revving itself after gear change :S

This is probably clutch related but worth a shot !.

I got my S3 mapped at the weekend very happy !. However i have noticed something , It was doing this before the map and no more now it has been but its annoying !.

If you give it some beans in first or second, Push the clutch in change gear just as you push the clutch in it revs abit then drops down :S. The clutch does not actually slip and feels fine at the moment. Ive tested and tried ( Going up a hill in 4th ) no slipping.

It does not do this every time it just strikes me as odd , It makes the car sound horrible though and makes people look so i need to get it sorted !.
The clutch will be done next month regardless but if it sounds like anything else your opinions would be grande !.
 
Sorry havent been very clear with the title, Its not after gearchange its just before just after you have pressed the clutch in .
 
Could possibly be a faulty clutch switch - when mine was playing up the Revs use to hold for a moment or two before dropping down when putting the clutch in
 
Clutch switch ? , Is this mechanical or electronic ?. Sorry to be stupid here lol.
 
Its a electronic switch, it is located at the top of the clutch pedal

The install process is pretty much the same as the Brake light switch (Guide here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?1158315)

You may want to wait for someone else's opinion as am sure there are people with more knowledge/experience around here than me!
 
yeah has to be clutch switch. The new switches have been totally revised. Cost about £11 from audi I think
 
Ok then , so if this is the issue what is it actually doing for it to rev?. Sticking in position or something?.
 
i had this problem and indeed it was the clutch switch. Got it from the dealer, price around 13
easy change too...but if you like try to reset yours first.
take it off then there is a little black pin right on the middle of the top (mmmm...)
just slide it out to the max
then fit the switch back again at its place...and drive
if the problem stills...change it
 
Out of intterest does this issue throw up any fault codes ? , surely if its electrical it should ?.
 
No fault code.
It is mechanical and electrical at the same time...and most of the time it is the mechanical side that broke
 
The clutch switch is to disengage Cruise when the pedal is depressed. Don't be shocked if it doesn't cure the issue. A search will show you many people replacing it but not curing the issue. As with most on line discussions somebody reads a post on a cure and repeats the advice and quickly it becomes the standard response. The plus point it is cheap if you wish to try it.
Strange thing is my works car is a VW Golf Diesel brand new and the revs rise if I depress the clutch sat at traffic lights, not all the time though. Does the fault occur stationery in the car and in neutral when you depress the pedal or only between gear changes?
 
I had exactly the same problem. The beginning of which was a broken clutch pedal.

A friend who fitted the new clutch pedal assembly accidentally broke the small rod section of the clutch pedal position switch clean off. So as you can imagine to my horror I was like oopps another expensive mistake. Anyhow I drove the car around for a few weeks before I'd taken it to Awesome GTI and had it replaced (part of the required cruise control operation). I must say that I experienced exactly the same as you have. Revs going upward slightly on gear change or clutch depress!

It wasn't doing this before we'd began work on the clutch pedal assembly. So I knew it could only be that. Once replaced, problem cured. I would be very surprised to find that replacing it in your case does not solve the problem.

Even my new sensor is broken. Failed after a few days, these parts are known to fail easily.

I has this problem aswell! I changed the clutch switch but this didn't solve anything. This is a problem Audi will never know the solution to lol. I'm used to it now so it doesn't bother me anymore!
 
I think i tried 2 or 3 and not one of them completly made it go away. Its not as bad as it used to be so i can live with it now . For £13 ists worth a try though.
 
Deffo start with clutch switch.

It may just be broken, or have fallen off like mine when one of the retaining lugs snapped.

They are less than £15 from Audi.
 
Nice to see Audi's and Renaults share similar issues with cheap switches . . .

Nooooooooooo. If it's made of plastic with either the VW or 4 rings stamped on it, it is ***** and practically guaranteed to break.

Take the dipstick shroud for example.

No its odd it only seems to do it when changing gear once you have given it some beans.
I haven't noticed it when im at lights and stationary.

Thats actually only partly true. The clutch switch is used by the ECU for both cruise control disengage, as well as rev matching for gear change. This is how the engine knows that the clutch has been depressed.

No clutch switch means revs shoot up as the ECU doesn't recognise the clutch is depressed quickly enough.

As with most on line discussions somebody reads a post on a cure and repeats the advice and quickly it becomes the standard response.

I speak from experience and research, as opposed to 'reading someone else's post' thanks.

well if clutch switch wasnt your issue, id be look at throttle body cleaning and alignment or vac leaks on the inlet and assosiated pipes, although this usually has other side effects.

I think most people speak from experience when it comes to this, seems to be really really common fault. Mine was obviously fault as it was wobbling about where the plastic has started to let go.

Dont forget if you fit a new one... you shouldnt pull the plunger

Stripping an engine had what to do with what? The reason I posted was due to having a faulty clutch switch, with the EXACT same symptoms.

Followed by a post correcting your incorrect post of 'it is only used for the cruise control'.

Which it isn't.

Ooooh, and I just spotted your edit.... Nothing to do with being a 'know all'. What it does have to do with, is trying to help out someone who has asked a question. I believe that to be the point of forums?

Anyway, I have neither the time nor inclination to argue about something petty with a member of the 'pen' fifteen club - it only ends up in getting told of by the mods! LOL.

Chancer....if you've nothing positive to add to this thread might I suggest you refrain from posting here. Negative comments and personal attacks are just plainly not necessary. We are ALL here for the greater GOOD!

It's users like for instance, ESS-Three, Badger5, Tuffty, Welly.....the list goes on & on......that actually make the forum a wealth of information when it comes to mechanical & technical expertise. Not to mention the sponsored section and companies that give help to users.

The fact IS we are all posting what our experiences are, and with this problem, it happens to be clutch position sensor that most of us have replaced and have cured the initial problem. It's not as you said "just" for cruise control, thanks for point that out Welly! :).

This was EXACTLY the case with my car, read my above post. I changed it and although the cruise control doens't work at the moment the car is NO longer a nightmare to drive, with over revving during gear changes!
