Just been wading through new car sites to see if there is anything decent about, and I noticed the S3 is actually quite a bargain at the moment.

S3 base price: £28,250 (manual, 3 door OTR)
Scirocco R base price: £28,505 (manual OTR)
Golf R base price: £30,300 (manual, 3 door OTR)

Is there something special about the two VW models that means they carry a price premium? The Rocco is 2wd ***.

I know Audi's are due a price increase of 2% across the range very shortly, but at present its pick of the bunch price wise.

Is VW getting delusions of grandeur, or has the world gone mad??

the rocco and golf are new models so they get priced at the currnt rate of inflation and the s3 has been out for a while so even when they add to the price it comes in a little cheaper, or soemthing like that

No your not. Right now i prefer anything without an Audi badge on the back...

I'm clearly still on my own in preferring the Scirocco R to the S3...

can you see why I question the fact it's more expensive as a 2wd deritive of the s3??

Lovely car, but no way worth more in its spec (plus the options list is pitiful)

As discussed below, it's more a case of pricing policies, with Audi keeping A3 prices in the UK artificially low.

I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if the Golf/Roc are more cash than the S3 in Euro-land.

It makes no sense for the Roc to be more cash than the Audi, but I'd still pay the premium, as I think it looks a lot more special and I'm a big fan of the car generally.

I suppose you need to price them up on the road...I priced up an S3 yesterday and it came out nearer £34k and i was really carefull to go for basics ie no fancy seats or stitching, flashy wheels or sunroof etc...
This new showroom tax is a sod and of course the car will now be subject to £400 pa road tax.

What, a new MY11 S3 will be £400 a year tax??

I may as well get an RS4. Didnt realise that tax on S3 new models had gone up.

Just checking on that...will get back to you..

Off top of my head (usually wrong!) I think our MY07 is 217g/km and is now £235pa.

I think the newer models are lower, so I thought they'd have crept into the £235 price bracket too

Its hard to say how well they will hold their values too, what with an A3 3.2 fetching less than 10k all over the place and R32's fetching 14k plus it makes you wonder which brand is generally regarded as the superior?

Personally, I think all VW's, new or old suffer from "scene tax"

Looks like £425 for the first year and £225 then on if its under 200g co2. if its over its £525 first year and then £235

I cant bekive you are all posting on AS when the future of the next Dorothy is at stake :sadlike:

I was looking at the golf r and the s3 as they were the only two cars that ticked all the boxes and more as a move on from the cupra k1, i was surprised by the cost of the golf r compared to the s3 sportback, also there is very little discount on the golf and plenty on the s3...no brainer really, even though the s3 is an older platform and due to be replaced i am sure i will like it very much as i am currently driving a 1.6 astra untill it arrives (whenever that maybe)...

I must be the only person who thinks the Roc is a truely ugly car in the flesh. I think it looks great on the pics and then when I see one on the road I just think what a let down. That being said I might be weird because I think the 911 is the most timeless bit of design ever made in car tems. Golf R is serious money, has it any better interiour than the mk6 golf gti? I found it to be very drab although it might have been the light grey colour.

I agree to an extent. The car is under-wheeled from the factory and sits too high. But slam it on a set of 20's and I think it looks awesome.

No thats a woman and DONKEY!!! lol you cant win against!

Talking of price hikes Warren, feck me parts have gone up unreal, eg, the rns chrome dials were about £30, now more like £45 so thats a 30% increase, thats not alone either, all parts have had a huge hike, 1 repair wire I was after is £8, nothing special about it, worrying times tbh.

Rocco if it were 4wd would be a nice car to have, but lets see what the new A3 range holds for us I guess, cause even if I go of an audi badge, what will take its place, a Golf, Rocco, same damn parts anyway, also I dont see anyother cars on the road atm, that really say yeah wouldnt mind one of them as an every day car, although a cayman has caught my eye recently, but practical for me come august they are not, but great lines.

I mean, what sort of animal likes grass with dew on it so much you cant leave them in the field ? If you do as i found out, they eat till they jam up solid then it cost £4k to put them in horse hospital for a week where they put a hose and a funnel down their necks, at least 2ft, and poor oil down..A gallon at a time then with a bit of luck the whole thing explodes out the back after a few days. and the stupid animal goes and does it again...( the horse not the Mrs..) then one day you call it a ****** Donkey and thats it...your single again....Hooorayy

Didnt he ever get taken out of the field for exercise!!! Lucky you didnt get laminitis too then!!! now thats expensive!!!

Maybe the donkey comment made her think?? just a thought  ;) Least you have plenty of peace now!!!!

Well having priced an S3 at £34k i just did the Roco and that was £35k. a hell of a lot for what is really a 2WD Golf and is sure to have the same appalling customer service as Audi.

So we've worked out if you're in the market for a reasonably priced mode of transport, don't by a Golf, a Rocco, or a horse, and if you do then don't call it a donkey (FULL STOP!).

I am enlightened!

Sorry mate..sort of hijacked the thread...I will shut up :)

Not at all mate, it's cheered up what is a VERY sorry state of affairs!

I wanted an RS4, but I don't want any big out of warranty issues. Problem is my hand is forced that I have to change, keep or re-finance the bubble in September 2010 and I want to see what the final version of the RS3 looks like before I commit to anything. The TTRS is the other alternative but I'd much rather be able to offer lifts to friends or family occasionally, which as they are all able bodied and have legs is not on the cards in a TTRS. I've never been so torn!

I went to look at Golf R last weekend. Pulled up in mint S3 (right outside dealer window), checked out the Golf, helped myself to a brochure, walked out. Not one salesman even engaged with me (Kidlington Audi - Oxford). Was in there for 10 minutes. The arrogance of the VW group will be its ultimate undoing. Charge £40k; fine, but try and serve people to the price point. They're nothing but low level market traders in cheap outlet village suits and 90's haircuts.

My Renewal just came in the post today and its £245.

I think that once you have out grown the S3 you reach the next step up the ladder which means a purpose built performance car rather than a souped up shopping trolley ...
Think Cayman/Z4/911/TTS/RS /SL350+ etc..
If you really want to cart the relations about then 335i Coupe or AMG..
